Frisco RoughRiders News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - Preston Beck and J.T. Wise both hit two-run home runs but the Frisco RoughRiders could not hold a three-run lead against the Corpus Christi Hooks, falling 7-6 on Friday at Whataburger Field. The Hooks used a three-run fifth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit, and added a run in seventh and eighth to take their third straight game.
The Riders made a valiant comeback effort in ninth inning. Pat Cantwell and Drew Robinson both walked against Travis Ballew before Wise struck out. Beck collected his third RBI with a single and newcomer Luis Marte followed with a single to load the bases. Hooks manager Rodney Linares turned to Chris Cotton, who proceeded to strike out Jake Skole and get Luis Mendez to ground out to secure the 7-6 win.
Frisco led 5-2 heading into the fifth inning and that's when the Hooks put on a charge. Tyler White hit a two-run double to cut the deficit to one, and four batters later Roberto Pena tied the game at five with a sacrifice fly.
Danry Vasquez put the Hooks ahead with an RBI single in the seventh against David Martinez (1-4). Vasquez entered the hitting .114, but produced the game-winner going 1-for-4 on Friday. Jiovanni Mier added a key insurance run with his third hit of the game in the eighth to put the Hooks ahead 7-5.
Nick Williams' RBI single in the first inning gave Frisco an early 1-0 lead, but a double-play followed and the threat was quickly silenced by Joe Musgrove. The Hooks answered in the second with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Conrad Gregor and Jon Kemmer.
Beck hit his first career Double-A homer in the second inning to give the Riders a 3-2 lead. In the fourth, Wise added a two-run shot and Frisco led 5-2. Aaron West (3-3) worked three innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Chad Bell snapped a stretch of three straight quality starts on Friday. The left-hander worked into the fifth inning but could not record an out, allowing five runs and 10 hits to earn a no decision.
The RoughRiders will try to snap a six-game losing skid and salvage the series finale on Saturday behind Jose Leclerc (2-4). The club returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Sunday, June 21 to begin a four-game home stand against the Midland RockHounds. To celebrate Father's Day, the first 1,500 men (age 18 and older) will receive a free RoughRiders BBQ jersey apron and a spectacular fireworks show will follow the games.
