May 20, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Evansville, Ind. - The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, could not snap their losing streak today, falling to the Evansville Otters 8-6 at Bosse Field.
Florence (1-6) took a 3-2 lead on a three-run home run by Taylor Oldham in the fourth inning, but Evansville (4-2) put themselves out in front for good with three spots in the fifth and the sixth.
Trailing by four heading into the seventh inning, the Freedom began to chip away at the deficit. Austin Newell led off the inning with a walk before Collins Cuthrell singled and a Josh Henderson reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners with one out. Zach Mathieu and Andrew Godbold both followed with RBI singles, scoring Newell and Henderson respectively to bring the score to 8-6.
In the eighth, the Freedom loaded the bases with one out, but Evansville's Kevin Kleis escaped the jam by striking out Henderson and Elvin Rodriguez. In the ninth, Freedom went down 1-2-3 and the Otters picked up the victory.
Evansville jumped on Freedom starter Patrick McGrath from the get-go, scoring one run in the first and second frames. McGrath took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings. Tony Vocca came on in a one-run ballgame after a Garrett Vail RBI double in the sixth. Vocca gave up three hits, including a three-run home run to Ronaldo Gomez, in his first inning before working a 1-2-3 seventh. Matt Pobereyko allowed two base runners in the eighth, but Pete Levitt forced two quick outs to escape the jam.
Oldham's three RBIs led the Freedom offensively. He currently ranks third in the Frontier League with nine on the season. Vail, Mathieu and Godbold all recorded one RBI, while Newell reached base four times.
Dylan Badura earned the win and Randy McCurry notched the save, while Gomez led the Otters' offense with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
Florence looks to take game two of the series tomorrow. Zach Isler will make his Freedom debut tomorrow against Evansville's Hunter Ackerman (0-0, 10.38 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. local time, 7:35 p.m. Eastern.
