Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Marion, Ill. - With the Grizzlies trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning on Thursday night,, Tyler Tewell blasted a two-run homer to tie the game and would later drive in the winning run with a sac fly to propel Gateway to a 3-2 win at Rent One Park. The Grizzlies took the rubber game of their three-game set against the Southern Illinois Miners.

RHP Trevor Richards got the start for the Grizzlies and battled Miners starter Jarrett Miller early on, as both pitchers did not allow a run through the first three frames.

In the fourth, Aaron Gates led off the inning with a walk against Richards. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, he moved to third on a ground out. Richards then struck out Brendan O'Brien with two outs, but a dropped third strike squirted away from Tewell and allowed Gates to race home with the game's first run.

The Miners tacked on another run in the fifth when Gates struck an RBI double to make it 2-0.

The score remained that way until Tewell's second homer of the season in the seventh. In the bottom half of the inning, the Miners loaded the bases and put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. RHP Jordan Wellander (1-0) came on in relief and ended the threat by inducing a pop out from Steve Marino. Wellander also pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

RHP Jake Cose (0-1) replaced Miller for Southern Illinois and pitched a scoreless eighth, but he ran into trouble in the ninth with the game still tied 2-2.

Craig Massoni led off with a single and that was followed by a walk to Vin Guglietti. With one out, Brandon Thomas drew a walk to load the bases. Tewell then stepped to the plate and laced a deep line drive to centerfield that allowed Massoni to trot home from third base, which gave the Grizzlies a 3-2 edge.

JaVaun West picked up his second save of the series by pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Grizzlies head to River City for a three-game weekend series against the Rascals at CarShield Field. Gateway sends RHP Will Landsheft to the mound in the series opener. Sam Levitt and Matt Sabados will call the game on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs tomorrow on 1400 AM KJFF and www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio.
