Slammers Let Late Lead Slip Away in Series Finale

Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL - A big four-run seventh inning for the Washington Wild Things helped the Wild Things to a win over the Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy Thursday night, May 19, at Silver Cross Field.

The Wild Things put up four runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at five, and added two more in the eighth to win the game 7-5. The Wild Things avoided the series sweep as the Slammers took games one and two.

Brandon Poulson came in to pitch in the seventh inning and a pair of walks put two runners on. Brent Choban came in to pitch for Poulson after the two walks to make his debut and struggled on the mound.

Washington scored a run off a single for its first run and a wild pitch allowed the second run to score. Both runs were charged to Poulson.

After a ground out that brought in a run, with two outs, Jimmy Yezzo crushed a solo home run to right field to tie the game.

The Slammers got off to a quick 3-0 lead through the first three innings, scoring one run in each of the first three innings, but the Wild Things slowly inched their way back into the game, starting with a run in the fourth.

The Wild Things handed the Slammers their first run of the game as starting pitcher Conner Kendrick walked Boo Vasquez with the bases loaded scoring Melvin Rodriguez.

Charlie White helped the Slammers get their second run of the game in the second inning by laying down a perfect bunt to bring in Carter Bell, who led off the inning with a double off the left field wall. White also used his speed to beat out the play at first.

Joe Staley drove in Vasquez in the third inning on a sac fly to center field, but Staley's two-out two-run inside-the-park home run was the highlight for the Slammers Thursday night.

Staley hit a bouncing ball right over third base near the line and the Wild Things' left fielder Andrew Heck appeared to think the ball was foul and did not move for it, allowing Staley to round the bases. Staley drove in three runs in the game.

Luke Crumley got the start on the mound for the Slammers and would pitch 3.2 innings. He was replaced by Tyler Levine who also shut down the Wild Things' lineup in his 2.1 innings of work.

Thursday's Merchants and Manufacturers Bank player of the game was Joe Staley for his two-run inside-the-park home run.

Despite the loss, the Slammers still earned their first series-win of the season and will head into the weekend with a 3-4 record.

The Slammers will head to Traverse City to take on the Traverse City Beach Bums in a three game series beginning Friday May 20. Game one will begin at 7:05 p.m., game two will start at 6:05 p.m., and game three will start at 5 p.m.
