Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - Former Chicago Cub and National League MVP, Andre Dawson will spend Saturday, June 18 at Silver Cross Field for a day dedicated to his career and achievements in baseball history. The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy are excited to welcome the team's second Chicagoland sports icon after hosting Pete Rose in 2015.
"Andre Dawson is a legend," said Joliet Slammers President and Majority Owner Nick Semaca. "I remember how we in the bleachers at Wrigley would salute him with a deep salaam when he came out to play right field. Every Cub fan loved him. His appearance at Silver Cross Field is a chance for our fans to come out and meet a real gentleman and one of the greatest Cub players of all time."
Within his twenty-one year career, Dawson was named Rookie of the Year in 1977 and later the National league MVP in 1987. The right-handed outfielder was an eight time Gold Glove winner as well as a four time Silver Slugger award winner. In 2010, Andre "The Hawk" Dawson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Dawson was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1975 and only played in 186 minor league games until he became a part of the club, in which he was later named Rookie of the Year. After leaving Montreal, Dawson signed with the Chicago Cubs. In just his first season with the organization, he claimed league MVP and won another Gold Glove Award.
On Saturday, June 18, Silver Cross Field will open at 6:05 p.m. to fans for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Schaumburg Boomers. That evening, Dawson will return to the diamond to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Dawson will remain on field, bringing his knowledge of the game to the Slammers, as he coaches the team at both first and third base. In the fourth inning, Dawson will be signing fan autographs on the concourse for one hour. Fans can bring in items for autographs. Bats will not be permitted into the stadium. Slammers gear worn by Dawson will be available to bid on throughout the game in a silent auction.
A pre-game Meet and Greet Package that runs 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. is available for fans to purchase. The package includes a ticket to the game, the opportunity to have memorabilia signed, a picture taken with Dawson, and a souvenir t-shirt. In addition, fans will get to hear the MVP speak in the pre-game meet and greet. A cash bar will also be available.
For more information on the night or the meet and greet package, fans can call the box office at (815) 722-2287 or visit jolietslammers.com.
