Late Rallies Not Enough in St. Paul

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning but came up on the short end of a 7-5 loss to the St. Paul Saints on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints won the rubber game to take the series from the Pheasants before 5,014 fans at Midway Stadium.

The Saints never trailed after catcher Benji Johnson broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an RBI double, and Ronnie Bourquin followed one batter later with a three-run home run off Pheasants starter Pete Gehle (1-2) for a 4-0 advantage.

Controversy came in the fifth inning when Saints outfielder Jose Hernandez hooked a pitch out of play to left field. It was ruled a fair for a three-run home run despite arguments from Pheasants players and manager Steve Shirley.

The Pheasants rallied for four runs with two outs in the sixth on Cesar Nicolas' two-run single, followed by a two-run bomb from Cristian Guerrero. Guerrero's league-leading eighth home run of the year hit the top of a tall scoreboard in left center field.

Saints closer Anthony Cleggett allowed a leadoff double to Guerrero and walked Mark Shorey to start the top of the ninth. Trevor Lawhorn knocked home Guerrero, cutting the Saints' lead to 7-5. After Al Quintana struck out for the first out, Joe Anthonsen walked to load the bases, but the Pheasants could not do any further damage. Jonny Kaplan struck out, and Cory Morales flew out to center to end the game. Claggett earned his second save of the season in as many days.

Guerrero led the Pheasants' offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and a triple shy of the cycle.

Gehle suffered his second loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Chris Odegaard (1-3) earned his first win, holding the Pheasants to four runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings.

The Pheasants begin a three game, home-and-away series with the Sioux City Explorers on Monday, June 11, preceded by the resumption of a suspended May 19 game. The suspended game will resume at 6:05 p.m., followed by a seven-inning game.
