Sanford Mainers News Release
Montpellier, Vermont - The Sanford Mainers went on the road on Tuesday night and pulled out a gritty win on the back of another strong performance by the bull pen and a two-out no doubt home run from Laurence Hill to beat the Vermont Mountaineers by a final of 4-3. On Hill's first hit of the season, the Mainers have now won four straight road games and six of their last seven games total.
Sanford struck first for the fourth straight game as an RBI double from Tyler Solomon (Haymarket, Va./Vanderbilt) brought home Conner Shepherd (Upland, Calif./Texas Christian University) in the top of the 2nd inning. They would add another in the top of the 3rd on a fielder's choice off the bat of Johnny Rizer (Cypress, TX/Texas Christian University) that scored Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC-Asheville) and put the Moose up 2-0.
Cole Whitney (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Georgia Southern) turned in a great start on the mound as he retired the first six hitters he faced, striking out four (six in total), and kept the Mountaineers off the scoreboard through the first three innings.
After the Mountaineers tied the game in the bottom of the 4th inning on a two-run home run by Nate Grys, who accounted for all three runs Vermont would score, the Mainers jumped back on top in the top of the 5th on another fielder's choice. Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton) beat out a double play attempt by the Mountaineers that brought home Jonathan White (Lawrenceville, Ga./Presbyterian) and gave Sanford a 3-2 lead after five innings.
An RBI double for Vermont would tie the game up in the bottom of the 6th and the game would remain knotted at three into the 9th. That is when with two outs and two strikes, Laurence Hill (Durham, Conn./Rhode Island) caught every stitch of a low inside fastball and sent it soaring over the 350' mark in left center field for his first hit, and home run, of the season to give the Mainers a 4-3 lead.
The Mainers' bull pen did exactly what they have made a living off of early in this season as three pitchers combined to throw three scoreless innings and give Sanford the win. Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Southern Maine) and Mike Vasturia (Medford, N.J./Maryland) got Vermont to go one, two, three in the 6th and 7th as reigning NECBL Pitcher of the Week John Murphy (Merchantville, N.J./Maryland) slammed the door shut in the 9th to tie teammate Jack Weisenburger (Rockford, Mich./Michigan) with his league-leading third save of the season.
Sanford heads back home for one game tomorrow night, Wednesday June 20th, to take on the North Adams Steeplecats as they look to get one back after a tough loss to the same team last Friday night. You can catch all the action live on the NECBL Broadcast Network with pregame coverage starting at 6:20.
