Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport starter Russell Smith spun a gem Monday night striking out ten through five and a third innings and surrendering only one unearned run. He picked up his first win of the season in a game where the Gulls outhit Danbury 26-11.

After falling behind 1 - 0 in the second inning, the Gulls jumped ahead 6 - 1 in the bottom half and never surrendered the lead. Eventually building it to 21 -1, Austen Michel allowed one earned run in two and two thirds innings of relief, coming in the eighth inning and Mike McCaffrey allowed three in the ninth. Newport would go on to win by a final score of 23 - 5.

Every Newport batter who came to the plate had at least one hit. Cole Austin went six-for-six on the day with a triple, a double and four singles, as well as being hit by a pitch. He had a chance for the cycle as early as the game's fifth inning and had three RBI as well. Kody Hoese hit his fourth homerun of the season, tying him with Austin for the team lead and had four RBI on the day while going four-for-five, tying for the game high of any player on the team with Logan Harvey. Liam O'Regan made his return known when he belted a three-run, pinch-hit homer in his first at-bat since returning from an injured wrist.

The Gulls will play two versus the New Bedford Bay Sox (6 - 5) tomorrow when the two teams will resume their previously suspended game from last week then play a seven-inning game immediately after.
