Late Homer Hands B-Mets Third-Straight Loss, 5-4

BINGHAMTON, NY - Tim Kennelly's solo home run in the ninth inning broke a tie game and helped the Reading Phillies defeat the Binghamton Mets 5-4 tonight at NYSEG Stadium.

The R-Phils grabbed the first lead in the second. Brent Clevlen led off the inning by ripping Matt Harvey's first pitch over the left-centerfield for his fifth homer of the season.

Harvey hit a rough patch in the third. Troy Hanzawa led off with a walk and the opposing pitcher Austin Hyatt reached on a bunt single up the first base line. Harvey handed out a free pass to Michael Spidale and paid for it when Ozzie Chavez lined an RBI single off the right field fence.

Carlos Rivero's ground out to first plated another run and a walk to Clevlen reloaded the bases. Harvey's fourth walk of the inning, a free pass to Matt Rizzotti, brought home Spidale and gave Reading a 4-0 lead.

The third inning proved to be Harvey's final frame. He allowed four runs on three hits and walked four. The bullpen took over and kept the deficit at four. Erik Turgeon allowed two hits over two scoreless innings and Edgar Ramirez added two more shutout frames.

Meanwhile, the B-Mets offense was kept on a leash for five innings against Hyatt. The right-hander did not face more than four batters in each of his first five frames. Binghamton finally solved him in the sixth.

Juan Lagares lined a single to right and moved to third when Brahiam Maldonado shot a single to centerfield. With two outs, Allan Dykstra refused to let Hyatt off the hook. The first baseman launched a long homer over the right field fence. His 18th blast of the season cut the deficit to one.

Binghamton erased that deficit in the seventh. Dusty Ryan led-off against reliever Jacob Diekman with a single to right, moved to second on Jon Malo's sac bunt, and came home on Kai Gronauer's pinch-hit single to right.

Ricky Brooks took the mound in the ninth in a tie ballgame and pitched around a lead-off single by Clevlen to post a scoreless inning. In the bottom half of the frame, a two-out single by Dykstra chased Diekman from the game. B.J. Rosenberg entered as part of a double switch and induced Eric Campbell to fly out to Tim Kennelly in left.

Kennelly's role in the game proved pivotal. After entering the game as the defensive half of Reading's double switch in the eighth, he faced Brooks with one out in the ninth. The utility man ripped the second pitch he saw from the righty over the left field fence for his fifth homer of the game.

For the third night in a row, the B-Mets compiled a ninth inning rally. Ryan bounced a lead-off double down the first base line against Rosenberg and moved to third on a sac bunt. With the tying run on third, Rosenberg struck out pinch-hitter Mike Fisher and fanned Matt den Dekker to end the game.

The B-Mets (65-75) conclude their season tomorrow afternoon against the Reading Phillies at 1:05pm. RHP Jeurys Familia (4-3, 3.38) will take on RHP Tyson Brummett (3-8, 4.62). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 12:50pm on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
