THE PLAYOFF RACE: The Flying Squirrels enter game three with the Altoona Curve tonight leading the Bowie Baysox by a 1 1/2 games for the Wild Card in the Western Division...The Baysox will play one fewer game (141) than the Flying Squirrels (142) this season...Richmond's magic number to eliminate Bowie from playoff contention is one...A Flying Squirrels win or Baysox loss would eliminate Bowie from playoff contention...The Harrisburg Senators clinched the Western Division with Thursday night's 10-0 win over Portland and will host the first two games of the Western Division playoffs 9/7 and 9/8.
EXTRA SPECIAL: The Flying Squirrels improved to 7-4 in extra innings with their 6-3, 14-inning win last night over the Curve...It was Richmond's first extra-inning game since 8/27 at Akron and just the club's second extra-inning game since 5/28 at Akron...It was the fifth four-plus hour game of the season for the Flying Squirrels and the club's fourth game of at least 14 innings...The longest game of the season for the club was a five hour and 27 minute, 18-inning marathon 4/30 at Bowie.
THE GEORGIA PEACH: Second baseman Charlie Culberson went 3-for-7 last night with two doubles and a RBI, giving him hits in six straight games...It is his seventh hit streak of five games or more this season, tying him with Francisco Peguero and Roger Kieschnick for the team lead...The 22-year-old is 14-for-30 (.467) with five doubles, a home run, eight RBIs, and five runs scored over his last six games...He turned in his 10th three-hit performance of the season last night, matching a season high...The Georgia-native hit .231 (25-for-108) in 28 games in August, and eight of his 25 hits for the month as well as three of his six doubles came over the final three games in the month...Culberson was batting .181 (17-for-94) through his first 25 games in August.
HERE'S JOHNNY: Catcher Johnny Monell went 3-for-6 last night with two doubles, a triple, a RBI, and three runs scored...It was third time a Richmond hitter collected three extra-base hits in a game this season and first since Charlie Culberson hit three doubles 7/19 at New Britain...The 25-year-old's triple was his first this season and the seventh of his five-year pro career...His three runs scored were a new season high.
THE DON JUAN: Outfielder Juan Perez went 4-for-6 last night with a triple and a run scored...It was the fifth four-plus hit game of the season for a Flying Squirrel batter and second for the 24-year-old...He collected a season-high and career-high five hits 5/15 against Harrisburg...The triple was his Eastern League-leading 10th of the season...It is the second consecutive season with 10 triples for the Bronx, New York, native.
HOME AND AWAY: The Flying Squirrels finished the regular season 45-26 overall at home - the best home record in the Eastern League - and they are the only team in the league with 40 or more wins at home...They batted .264 in 71 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.56 runs per game at home (324R/71G)....Overall, the club is 30-39 on the road, and is batting .231 and averaging 3.59 runs per game (248R/69G) in 69 road contests...The team plays its final two games on the road.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 3.49 ERA through 140 games...Richmond's pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in 49 of its 140 games (35%)...Starting pitching has allowed three runs or less in 97 of the team's 140 games (69%) and the club is 67-30 in those contests.
