Late Goal Powers Madison Past Dubuque

The Dubuque Fighting Saints couldn't find the back of the net on Wednesday night and the Madison Capitols skated away with a 2-1 victory. Dubuque dropped to 7-8-1-2 on the season as Joey Lamoreaux stopped 36 shots in route to his fourth victory this season. The Fighting Saints are back in action on Saturday at Sioux Falls.

-The top line produced the only scoring of the game for Dubuque as they tallied in the first period. Willie Knierim found James Sanchez on a back door play and Matias Maccelli got a secondary assist. The Fighting Saints dominated with that line on the ice.

-The Saints dominated the first period in general, but Lamoreaux and the Capitols kept things close. Madison was outplayed and outshot, but only down 1-0 after one.

-The Capitols did an outstanding job on the penalty kill as they not only limited the Fighting Saints chances, but also created plenty of their own. Dubuque gave up two or three great chances to Madison while a man up, but the Capitols couldn't capitalize.

-The Fighting Saints were done in once again by a late power play goal. Kristoff Papp scored the game winner with under six minutes to play in the third period and Madison buckled down after the goal went in.

-Dubuque played well at times during the game, but ultimately didn't find the goal more than once. The Saints offense has been on and off with the consistency of the top line producing most of the goals over the four game losing streak.

-Matthew Thiessen had one of his best games in a long time for the Fighting Saints, but didn't get the result once again. Thiessen has been snake bit in the loss column, but his performance tonight showed the net minding Dubuque is accustomed to. Thiessen made three to five fantastic saves for the Saints.

-After a strong start at home, the Fighting Saints have now dropped three in a row at Mystique Community Ice Center. The losing streak for Dubuque is now at four games after the one goal loss to Madison.

-This was the fifth game out of seven that was decided by one goal for the Fighting Saints. Dubuque continues to play games close at home and the last few haven't gone the Saints way.

-The opponent on Saturday will be the Sioux Falls Stampede. Sioux Falls is currently sitting towards the bottom of the Western Conference, despite a 5-1-1 start to the season.
