Late Goal Gives Sea Dogs Win over Eagles
December 16, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- In a game that saw both teams come from behind, Brady Burns scored the winning goal for Saint John with just 83 seconds left in regulation.
- Goaltenders Nicolas Ruccia (Cape Breton) & Ventislav Shingarov (Saint John) both delivered strong performances as Saint John outshot Cape Breton 40-36.
- Charles Boutin & Olivier Houde each registered a goal and an assist for the Eagles, while Samuel Johnson also scored and Ivan Ivan picked up an assist.
The game started with a quick pace, as the first whistle didn't come until after the six minute mark. However, it would take substantially longer for the game to find its first goal- Charles Boutin putting the Eagles ahead 1-0 after a nice rush up the right wing at the 9:08 mark of the second period.
Saint John was given a big opportunity later in the period, when the Eagles were whistled for too many men on the ice, and Conor Shortall was given two minutes for checking to the head. Burns scored 23 seconds into the two minute five on the three, but the Eagles killed off the balance, and the period ended locked at 1.
Special teams would factor into the third period too- both teams netting a power play goal before the 11 minute mark. First, Cam MacDonald put the home side in front with a shot from the blueline to make it 2-1. The Eagles then countered on a four minute power play when Houde was left alone in front of the net. He was able to score 15 seconds into the man advantage, then Saint John killed off the second double minor.
While Saint John killed off the second minor, they couldn't prevent the Eagles from taking the lead at even strength when a two pass give and go between Johnson and Boutin finished with Johnson giving the Eagles the lead with 6:03 to play. But just as the Eagles rallied earlier, so too would Saint John, as Burns found Connor Trenholm at the side of the net to knot the game at 3.
The last word belonged to Burns, coming in and ripping a shot by Ruccia in the final two minutes. Not long after the ensuing faceoff, the Eagles lifted their goaltender in an effort to tie the game but couldn't find a goal and Saint John skated to a 4-3 victory.
The same two teams will battle tomorrow night as the finish the first half of the season in Saint John. Puck drop is 7 PM Atlantic time.
