Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats picked up a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and come away with a 5-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night in the regular season finale between the teams. Savannah took three of four from Augusta in the series and finished the regular season series with a 15-6 record against the GreenJackets.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the eighth, a fielding error put leadoff man Albert Cordero at first for the Sand Gnats. After Cordero was bunted to second and Joe Bonfe was walked to set up the double play, Juan Torres smashed a liner to left to bring Cordero home with the go-ahead run to give the Sand Gnats a 4-3 edge on Torres's third hit of the game. Bonfe scored later in the inning on a groundout to give the Sand Gnats a 5-3 lead headed into the ninth.
Bobby Haney singled to open the ninth for the GreenJackets, but Hamilton Bennett picked up back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to end the game and pick up his 11th save of the season and second in this series.
Savannah struck in the first inning as Darrell Ceciliani doubled to open the frame, took third on a groundout and scored on Rafael Fernandez's sacrifice fly to give the Sand Gnats a 1-0 edge. Three straight hits in the third led to a pair of runs as Fernandez brought home one with the third of those hits to put the Gnats up 2-0. Cordero's sacrifice fly later in the inning pushed Savannah's lead to three.
Taylor Rogers gutted out a six-inning performance, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out a pair. The GreenJackets came from behind to take him off the hook for the loss - scoring once in the fourth when Devin Harris and Ryan Scoma hit back-to-back doubles to produce a run and twice in the fifth on a Ryan Lollis sacrifice fly and a Joel Weeks squeeze bunt to tie the game at three.
The GreenJackets stranded the go-ahead run on first in the sixth and on third in the seventh before the Sand Gnats picked up their runs in the eighth inning to take the lead. Gabriel Zavala (2-5) benefitted from Savannah's rally, firing a perfect eighth inning to get the win. Austin Fleet (7-4) took the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs in two innings.
The GreenJackets return home on Friday to open a four-game series with the Rome Braves. Mike Kickham (2-7, 5.02) will start the series opener against Carlos Perez (4-7, 4.78) in a battle of lefties. Any fan who brings a new school supply to the ballpark for any of the next four home games will receive a FREE general admission ticket to that night's game courtesy of the GreenJackets and Knology as part of their Back to School drive.
