Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, cruised to the 8-1 win against the Hagerstown Suns, before 2,332 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night.
The Crawdads (64-44, 24-16) set the tone early, plating four runs through the first four frames against LHP Robbie Ray (L, 2-2). Hickory struck for their first run in the first, as RF Josh Richmond knocked in SS Jurickson Profar from second base with a two-out RBI double down the left-field line, making it 1-0.
The 'Dads tripled the early lead with two runs in the second stanza. LF Jake Skole walked and DH Alejandro Selen doubled, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. DH Kellin Deglan ripped an RBI single through the right side of the infield, plating Skole from third, before Profar produced the exact same hit one out later to bring in Selen and stretch the lead to 3-0.
While the Crawdads were swinging away, RHP Cody Buckel (W, 5-3) continued to keep the Suns (61-48, 21-18) off the board with three straight perfect innings to begin his outing. Hagerstown loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with no one out, but Buckel worked out of the jam unscathed with a strikeout and two pop outs, before Hickory picked the bats back up in the bottom of the fourth.
With two down to start the inning, CF Braxton Lane kept the fourth going with a base hit. Profar drove him in all the way from first with an RBI double to left field, further extending the Hickory lead to 4-0.
The Suns got on the board against Buckel in the top of the fifth inning. With two on and one away, RF Michael Taylor drove an RBI double just out of the lunging reach of LF Jake Skole, scoring 1B Brett Newsome from second and cutting the Crawdads lead to 4-1.
RHP Ben Rowen (S, 1) took over on the mound and dealt scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh, before the 'Dads stretched the lead back out. With one out and the bases empty, the Crawdads rattled off four straight singles against RHP Shane McCatty to spark the rally. After base hits from Profar and 2B Odubel Herrera, Villanueva knocked in the frame's first tally with an RBI base hit to plate Profar. Clark singled to load the bases, and then Richmond reached on an RBI fielder's choice that brought in Herrera from third. Skole put the finishing touches on the charge with an RBI single to score Villanueva and make it 7-1.
After Rowen logged a three-up, three-down top of the eighth, Hickory tacked on a final run when Herrera plated Lane with an RBI single. Rowen finished his four-inning outing with a scoreless ninth, slamming the door on the Suns and closing the 8-1 win for Hickory.
