Salisbury, Md. - The Shorebirds scored two runs in eighth inning to defeat the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-2 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night. The Shorebirds finished the eight-game homestand 4-4. Jake Cowan did not factor into the decision but was superb over six innings. He scattered six hits and allowed just one run.
The Shorebirds were first to act in the second inning. With one out, Jacob Julius hit a line drive into left-center field. After a walk and a double steal put runners at second and third, Garabez Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds added a run in the fourth. Lisalberto Bonilla walked Jeremy Nowak and Joe Oliveira. With two outs, Rosa hit a grounder up the middle that Edgar Duran mishandled. The ball kicked to his left and Nowak turned third and Duran skipped a throw to the plate, allowing Nowak to score.
Lakewood got on the board in the fifth inning. Carlos Alonso hit a two-out single up the middle to score Maikel Franco, who hit a leadoff double.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the seventh. With two outs, Alonso hit a single up the right field line to score Jeff Lanning.
The Shorebirds plated two runs in the eighth inning. Brenden Webb hit a one out single through the right side of the infield. Then, Ty Kelly walked to put runners at first and second. After a fielder's choice grounder put runners at first and third, Michael Ohlman singled through the left side of the infield to give the âBirds a 3-2 lead. Jeremy Nowak came into score on two Lakewood throwing errors.
Luis Noel earned his staff high sixth win of the season by tossing a scoreless eighth inning. David Walters retired the âClaws in order in the ninth to earn his 26th save of the season, tied for third most in single-season franchise history.
The Shorebirds travel to Kannapolis, N.C. for game one of a four-game set at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday, August 5. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
