Late Error Proves Costly in 9-7 Loss

ZEBULON - Micah Bello hit a game-tying home run in the second and Andre Nnebe hit a game-tying homer in the sixth, but a costly error by Ethan Murray in the ninth allowed two late runs to score as the Carolina Mudcats, playing as the Micro Brews, fell 9-7 to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. Bello went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBI in the loss for Carolina.

Carolina (62-43) never led, but did manage to tie the game at 1-1 after the first, 2-2 after the second, 6-6 after the sixth and 7-7 after the seventh before seeing two-unearned runs come across in the ninth on Murray's throwing error to second. That error came with two outs in the ninth and with the bases loaded. Delmarva (59-46) led for most of the game and ended up with the victory while taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

Antoine Kelly started for the Mudcats and would work through two innings while allowing two runs and two hits. He also walked two and struck out four before leaving the game with 43 pitches (23 strikes) thrown. Both of Kelly's runs were allowed in on wild pitches over the first and second innings.

Carolina was down 1-0 in the first after Kelly's first wild pitch, but ended up tying the game when Delmarva's Donta' Williams misplayed a liner hit to left from Alex Binelas. The resulting error allowed Ethan Murray to score from third and to tie the game at 1-1. Kelly's second wild pitch in the second also scored a run as the Shorebirds went up 2-1. Bello, however, immediately answered with his second homer of the season as the Mudcats tied the game at 2-2.

Delmarva's John Rhodes then delivered a bases loaded, three-run double with two outs in the fourth while breaking the game open a bit and putting the Shorebirds up 5-2 in the fourth. Rhodes also scored a run in that same inning while lifting Delmarva to a 6-2 lead.

All four fourth inning runs were allowed in by reliever Jhoan Cruz as he would work through an inning and 2/3 for the Mudcats following Kelly's start. Cruz allowed just two hits, but walked four and allowed four runs in his outing.

Tyler Black later cut the Delmarva lead to 6-3 with a run-scoring double against starter Daniel Lloyd in the fifth. That run was one of just three allowed by Lloyd as he worked through four and 1/3 innings in his start. Lloyd also totaled a career high 10 strikeouts but would leave during the fifth after recording just one out.

Delmarva's 6-3 lead disappeared in the sixth after Nnebe connected on a three-run home run to tie the game at 6-6. Nnebe's homer was his fourth of the season and came off reliever Conor Grady who had replaced Lloyd in the fifth. Grady worked through two innings in all and wound up allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits before exiting the game.

While Nnebe's home run tied the game in the sixth, it was a home run from Jacob Teter in the seventh that broke the tie to put Delmarva up 7-6. That home run was allowed by reliever Junior Montero, but was Montero's only run allowed in what was his Carolina debut. Montero gave the Mudcats three and 1/3 in his first outing since arriving from the Arizona Complex League and would end up allowing just one run on two hits. He also walked four and struck out one.

Carolina was down 7-6 in the seventh before Bello used his third hit of the game to drive in Darrien Miller from second to then tie the game at 7-7.

Reliever Miguel Guerrero worked the eighth and ninth for Carolina and managed to hold the Shorebirds scoreless in the eighth before seeing two unearned runs score in the ninth on Murray's throwing error. That error came with two outs in the eight and with the bases loaded. Guerrero (6-3, 5.51) finished with five strikeouts and just two unearned runs allowed on two hits over two innings while taking the loss.

Reliever Rickey Ramirez earned the win for Delmarva after holding Carolina scoreless in part of the seventh, all of the eighth and eventually the ninth. Ramirez (2-0, 3.92) also struck out five and walked one over two and 2/3 innings.

Carolina fell to a 0.5 game back of Salem in the overall standings, and second playoff berth, as Salem won both of its games in a doubleheader versus Fredericksburg.
