
Stevens' Go-Ahead Triple Leads Woodpeckers to Third Win over GreenJackets

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Chad Stevens broke up a 4-4 tie in the seventh with a go ahead bases-clearing triple that led the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (49-57) to a 7-4 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets (43-63) on Friday night at Segra Stadium. The Woodpeckers continue the trend of the series, scoring five of their seven runs with two outs in an inning.
Augusta opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single from Bryson Horne against Aaron Brown to lead 1-0. The Woodpeckers countered in the home half when Quincy Hamilton connected with a two-run two-out RBI single against Estarlin Rodriguez to go ahead 2-1.
With one out in the third, Justin Williams smashed an opposite field solo home-run that extended the lead to 3-1. The GreenJackets cut the deficit to one with an RBI double by Landon Stephens that chased Brown from the game in the third. Jacob DeLabio made his Woodpeckers debut, and inherited the runner at second. Tyler Tolve singled in a run to knot the game up at 3-3. Brown still provided a strong start, striking out a season-high seven Augusta bats.
Carlos Calderon (W, 2-1) emerged from the bullpen in the fifth and retired the side in order, recording two strikeouts. He continued his strong outing in the sixth after surrendering a leadoff single and bouncing back with three straight strikeouts.
The GreenJackets took their second lead of the night in the top seventh on an RBI single with two outs from Cade Bunnell that made it 4-3. Joey Loperfido kept it a one-run game with a diving catch in center field to end the inning.
The Woodpeckers countered to take the lead back with a four-run seventh inning. Facing Malcolm Van Buren (L, 1-4), Jordan Brewer reached on a fielding error by Bunnell at third and advanced to second on a wild pitch. In the next at bat. Williams struck out on a breaking ball down in the dirt which got through the catcher and allowed him to reach safely at first. Hamilton tied the game with an infield single that scored Brewer from third. Miguel Palma drew a walk to load up the bases for Stevens, who belted the bases-clearing triple to give the Woodpeckers a 7-4 advantage.
Carlos Hiraldo (SV, 2) entered behind Calderon in the eighth, closed the inning, and proceeded to pitch a scoreless ninth to lock up the save.
Fayetteville will look to win the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m E.T. The Woodpeckers will start RHP Bryant Salgado (1-0, 0.00) and Augusta will counter with LHP Dylan Dodd (0-1, 6.75).
