
Hitting Falls Flat in 4-1 Loss to Hillcats

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell to the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-1 on Friday night in the fourth game of the series. The series is now tied two games apiece after the Birds won the opening two contests. Myrtle Beach falls back to .500 at 53-53, while Lynchburg moves up to 52-54. The game was broadcasted on the Marquee Sports Network, the TV home of the Chicago Cubs. A pre and postgame ceremony was held for Folds of Honor, an organization that provides scholarships for military families.
After the Pelicans started with two singles in the bottom of the first, they were held to just one hit for the rest of the game. Jacob Wetzel (1-4, RBI) brought home the only run of the game on a groundout in the third. Ed Howard (1-5, R) and Kevin Made (1-4) tallied the only other hits in the game.
Jose Miguel Gonzalez (4-7) took the loss after tossing the first five innings with two earned runs allowed off five hits. Jarod Wright came out of the bullpen and gave up one run through his three innings with four strikeouts.
Andres Melendez (1-4, HR, 3 RBI) provided the big blow for Lynchburg with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth. Angel Martinez (1-4, RBI) brought home the other run on a single in the seventh. The Hillcats collected nine hits on the night.
The visiting pitching staff struck out 14 with seven coming from starter Lenny Torres. Zach Hart (7-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts. Alaska Abney pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save with three strikeouts in his outing.
Myrtle Beach grabbed the lead first in the bottom of the third as Christian Franklin and Made were both hit by pitches. Howard grounded into a force out in between to reach base. Owen Caisse drew a walk to load the bases and Wetzel grounded out to second as Howard scored to put the Pelicans up 1-0.
Lynchburg took the lead and didn't look back with a three-run home run by Melendez in the top of the fourth. It was his sixth of the season. Angel Martinez knocked in a run in the top of the seventh on a single to make it 4-1.
Lynchburg and Myrtle Beach will meet on Saturday for game five of the series at 6:05 p.m.
