Cedar Rapids, IA - A sloppy ninth inning did the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday evening against the Lake County Captains as they fell 5-1 in the series opener. With the loss and a Wisconsin win over South Bend, the Kernels lead in the West Division has been trimmed to one game.

Sean Mooney pitched extremely well in his sixth start of the season, allowing a lone hit and three walks while striking out six batters while taking a no-decision.

Joe Garry Jr. put Cedar Rapids on the board first in the third inning with a leadoff solo shot to left. Lake County struck back with a run off the Kernels bullpen in the sixth, locking the game at one a piece.

Captains righthander Tanner Bibee threw well, allowing a lone run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine in a duel with Mooney.

Tied at one heading into the ninth, Lake County took advantage two Kernels errors on misplayed grounders to plate four and make it a 5-1 game. Cedar Rapids had Aaron Sabato reach on a single in the ninth but left him aboard as the Captains struck out the side.

Each of the final 10 Kernels outs were strikeouts.

Game two of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the first Copa Night of 2022.
