Scoring a run in each of their final two at-bats the Calgary Vipers rallied to defeat the Tucson Toros 4-3 in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven-innings games before 1560 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 3-1 the Vipers scored a run in the third inning, one more in the fifth to tie the game, and a final tally in the sixth frame to take their first lead of the game. With the win Calgary improves to 16-6 on the second half and 39-26 overall. The Snakes are now four and a half games up in first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Daniel Morari (2-0) took the win by recording the final two outs of the sixth inning while Claudio Galva picked up his second save of the night and league high 16th with two strikeouts in the seventh. Mark Michael started the game and battled his way through five and a third innings allowing four hits for two earned runs against.
For the second straight game the Toros scored in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead as Ron Perodin walked, stole second base, and scored on a Lino Garcia run batted in double.
Calgary tied the game at 1-1 in the second when Kevin Price walked, Drew Miller doubled, and Dillon O'Krane knocked in a run with a RBI groundout.
Tucson took the lead back at 3-1 in the third frame as Perodin singled, Garcia walked, Wally Backman Jr. drove in a run with a base hit, and Garcia scored on a fielding error by third baseman Caonabo Cosme.
The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the inning for a 3-2 score when Jorge Mejia, Brent Metheny, and Julio Ramirez wrapped three consecutive singles together with Ramirez recording the RBI.
Calgary again tied the game in the fifth at 3-3 as Mejia doubled, Metheny walked, and with two outs Price collected a RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth the Snakes took their first lead of the game at 4-3 when on a ten pitch at-bat Cosme doubled, Luis Taveras singled, and Isidro Perez notched his first professional base hit with a RBI single.
This series continues in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Tucson Toros on Thursday August 12th at 7:05 PM MDT and the five-game set wraps up on Friday August 13th at 7:05 PM MDT with Hawaiian Night at the ballpark.
The St. George RoadRunners will visit Calgary for a four game series on Saturday August 14th at 5:05 PM with Zoo at the Park Day, Sunday August 15th at 12:35 PM MDT for Team Photo Giveaway, and Monday August 16th and Tuesday August 17th with both games at 7:05 PM MDT.
