Calgary Vipers News Release
Making three top notch defensive plays the Calgary Vipers defeated the Tucson Toros 2-1 in the first game of a double-header featuring two seven-inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers had two outfielders throw out base runners including one at home plate while the team also turned a game saving double-play in the sixth inning. With the victory the Snakes have won five straight contests and improve to 15-6 on the second half and 38-26 overall. The Vipers are now four games up in first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Reggie Rivard (3-1) was solid on the mound and tossed five and a third innings without issuing a walk and allowing one run for the win while Claudio Galva earned his league high 15th save with a one-two-three seventh inning including two strikeouts. In the top of the sixth inning with two runners on and one out Jorge Vasquez entered the game and induced a groundball to third baseman Caonabo Cosme who beautifully started an inning-ending double-play to keep the potential tying run in scoring position.
Tucson took the lead at 1-0 in the top of the first inning as Ryan Priddy, Lino Garcia, and Cristobal Santana all singled with Santana recording the run batted in.
Calgary quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when Jorge Mejia and Brent Metheny singled to put runners at the corners and Julio Ramirez collected a RBI with a groundout.
In the top of the second Calgary's right fielder Jonny Kaplan threw out a runner at home plate with a perfectly placed tossed to keep the game tied.
Vipers' left fielder Drew Miller helped out defensively an inning later with a perfect throw to second base to prevent a double and record an assist.
The Snakes took a 2-1 lead in the fourth frame as Kevin Price doubled, Miller singled, and Luis Taveras hit a sacrifice fly.
Game two of this twin-bill will start in approximately 30 minutes time at 7:30 PM MDT.
This series continues in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Tucson Toros on Thursday August 12th at 7:05 PM MDT and the five-game set wraps up on Friday August 13th at 7:05 PM MDT with Hawaiian Night at the ballpark.
