Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that they have signed Henry Calderon (INF) to a Golden Baseball League contract ahead of tonight's series opener against the St. George RoadRunners. The minor league veteran was released by the RoadRunners last week as a result of the club's financial situation.
"Henry brings a wealth of knowledge and great defensive skills to our infield," said Seals Field Manager Kip Gross. "He is a consistent hitter that can drive in runs and will be a big asset to the front of our lineup."
Calderon, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, joins the Seals in the midst of his 13th year in professional baseball. Signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 1999, the 6'0" infielder joined the Yuma Scorpions in the Golden Baseball League's inaugural season after two stints at the AA level.
Over the course of four years with the Scorpions, Calderon notched 407 hits and RBI's in just 319 games played. Last season in St. George, the 33-year-old made his playoff debut following a .317 regular season batting average and 41 RBI's in southern Utah. Through 61 games this season, the former All-Star has posted a .303 batting average to go with 44 runs scored and 25 batted in.
In order to open a roster spot for Calderon, the Seals released Dale Swinford (INF) earlier in the week. The Pleasant Hill, California native posted a .282 batting average over the course of 53 games in Victoria.
The Seals open up a three-game series against the St. George RoadRunners at 7:05 p.m. (PT) tonight, with Wilver Perez on the verge of a new Golden Baseball League single-season stolen base record. Tickets are available by calling (250) 220-7777, or online via www.victoriaseals.ca. The contest will also be broadcast online on the Victoria Seals Broadcast Network via the 'Watch Live' link at www.victoriaseals.ca.
