Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, WA - Portland's power play took advantage of their opportunities Wednesday night defeating Everett 4-3. Going three for five on the power play, Portland scored on the man advantage once per period. Everett was down 4-1 just 4:19 into the third period but scored twice on the power play later in the frame from goals by Kellan Tochkin and Shane Harper to make the game close. Several scoring opportunities were developed late in the game but shut down by Portland goaltender Ian Curtis. Dan Iwanski rounded out the scoring for Everett while Alex Theriau had two assists on the night.
It didn't take long for the Portland Winterhawks to get on the board Wednesday night. Capitalizing on an early Cameron Abney high-sticking penalty, Ryan Johansen collected his third goal of the season on the power play. Johansen grabbed a rebound at the right circle off a Troy Rutowski slap shot from the point to put Portland up 1-0 at 1:21. The Winterhawks continued their momentum at 5:30 when Luke Walker scored his fifth of the season to make the score 2-0. Walker fired a hard slap shot from the top left circle beating Thomas Heemskerk low blocker side to increase Portland's lead. Despite the deficit Everett led in shots 9-8 after 20 minutes of play.
The Silvertips put up their first goal of the game at 2:38 of the second period after Daniel Iwanski scored his second goal of the year. Iwanski patiently waited behind the Portland net before wrapping around the left side of the net and getting a bounce off Portland goaltender Ian Curtis' stick. The puck deflected off the stick and through the five-hole to cut Portland's lead down to one. The Winterhawks took advantage of the power play for the second time on the night after Brad Ross scored his second goal of the season. Heemskerk sprawled making several great saves before Ross collected a rebound at 10:33 to making the score 3-1.
Johansen struck again in the third period putting home his second of the night on the power play at 4:19. A centering pass in the slot from Johansen deflected off a skate in front of Heemskerk beating the Everett netminder five-hole to increase Portland's lead to 4-1. Everett took advantage of the power play as well in the third after Kellan Tochkin scored his first goal of the season at 12:08. Tochkin's first of the season trimmed the Winterhawks lead to 4-2. Shane Harper scored his second of the season after a snipe from the right circle beat Curtis high glove side at 16:56. The goal would come on the power play and bring the score to 4-3 Portland. Everett pulled Heemskerk in the final minute of regulation but couldn't find the back of the net as Portland held off the Silvertips for a 4-3 win.
This brings the 'Tips record to 2-2-0-0 with 4 points in 4 games played. Everett gets three days rest before coming right back to Comcast Arena this Sunday, October 11th to face the Portland Winter Hawks.
