Largest Crowd of Season Sees Spikes Fall to Doubledays on Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A crowd of 5,412 fans, the largest attendance of the 2018 State College Spikes season, saw the Spikes drop a 4-0 decision to the Auburn Doubledays on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The large crowd, many of whom were on hand for Mifflin & Juniata County Night, presented by The Sentinel, part of the Community Nights Series presented by CATA, enjoyed another fantastic FIREWORKS show after the game presented by Boyles Insurance.

Following the fireworks of the Spikes' (34-33) record comeback on Friday, however, State College was held off the board on four hits on Saturday. Cameron Knight collected two of those hits to lead the offense.

The defeat dropped State College to 2 1/2 games back of the lead for the New York-Penn League's lone Wild Card berth. The Spikes remained in fourth place in the Wild Card standings, with Brooklyn having taken over as the leader following Saturday's action. State College also remained in third place in the NYPL Pinckney Division race, 3 1/2 games back of leader Mahoning Valley.

Nic Perkins gave Auburn (36-31) the lead with a bases-loaded, three-run double in the first. In the fifth, following a balk on State College pitcher Diego Cordero (2-4) that erased an inning-ending pickoff, Pablo O'Connor singled to bring in what proved to be the last run of the game.

Cordero went seven innings in his start, and took the loss after yielding all four Auburn runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out five.

Auburn reliever Alfonso Hernandez (1-0) picked up the win after tossing 3 2/3 innings as the middle man in the Doubledays' shutout. Hernandez gave up one hits and two walks while striking out two batters, and followed starter Luis Reyes, who was on rehab assignment from Double-A Harrisburg. Ryan Tapani, son of former major leaguer Kevin Tapani, then finished the game with 2 1/3 two-hit innings in which he struck out three batters.

The Doubledays ended a six-game losing streak with the win, while the Spikes took just their fourth loss in the last 19 games.

Sunday, the Spikes hit the road to begin a three-game series at the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) with a late afternoon matchup starting at 4:05 p.m. Left-hander Jacob Schlesener (2-4) will take the hill for State College, and will be opposed by right-hander Alberto Guerrero (2-5) for Batavia.

Following the three-game set in Batavia, the Spikes return home for their final home series of the regular season when they meet the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) for a trio of 7:05 p.m. matchups from Wednesday through Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Highlights include Wednesday's Salute to Esports Night, Thursday's rescheduled Myrtle Beach Trip Giveaway and FIREWORKS presented by VisitMyrtleBeach.com to go with Bark in the Park IV presented by NEWSRADIO 1390 WRSC, THON Night and a Spikes Fanny Pack Giveaway for the first 500 fans presented by First National Bank, and more FIREWORKS with LuCKy's Kia Giveaway II on Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Lion Country Kia and MAJIC 99 to close out the regular season on Friday.

In addition, college students across Central PA can enjoy even more value during every remaining Spikes home game with the College 3-2-1 Special. The College 3-2-1 Special offers any college student presenting a valid student ID at ticket and concessions windows $3 off their seat in any ballpark section, excluding the Pepsi Picnic Pavilion and Luxury Suites, plus $2 regular sodas and $1 hot dogs all game long.

Tickets for all three games remaining on the 2018 Spikes home schedule, are currently on sale through the Spikes Ticket Office. Tickets can be purchased by calling (814) 272-1711 or by visiting the Ticket Office in person from 9 a.m. to the end of the game on gamedays Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to the end of the game on gamedays Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on non-gamedays Monday through Friday.
