Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - Zackarias Skog made 35 saves and the penalty kill unit kept the best power play in the league off the sheet on Saturday night as the Omaha Lancers defeated the league-leading Lincoln Stars 5-2 inside Ralston Arena.
A wrist shot from the top of the offensive zone circle gave the Stars the lead in period one. William D'Orsi took the puck at the top of the circles and found a lane to the front of the net. He let a shot go that beat Lancers' goaltender Zackarias Skog just 6:18 into the game. The goal was D'Orsi's fifth of the season with the only assist going to Christian Hausinger.
The Lancers stormed back for three unanswered goal to take a two-goal lead into the first intermission. The scoring started off the stick of Nick Rivera from the bottom of the left wing circle. Rivera took the puck and sent a back hand shot over the shoulder of Stars' netminder Peyton Jones for his fourth goal of the year and second tally on the weekend to tie the game 1-1. The goal came just 58 seconds after the Stars took their lead and was assisted by Josh French for his eighth point of the year.
An interception in the offensive zone by Hank Crone helped the Lancers take a 2-1 lead late in the first frame. A pass by Liam Schioler on a breakout attempt went right to Crone, who immediately shot the puck over the right shoulder of Peyton Jones with 3:14 left in the period. The goal was Crone's second of the year, unassisted.
With under one minutes remaining in the first period, Omaha took a two-goal lead thanks to a one-timer by Austin Alger. Nathan Krusko sent a pass to Alger, who sent a hard one-timer by the blocker of Peyton Jones for his third of the year and a 3-1 lead with 54.7 seconds left in the first period. The lone assist went to Krusko on the pass to Alger.
The penalty killing unit gained momentum for the Lancers in the second period as they kept the best power play off the scoreboard on three straight chances. As the third penalty was killed by the Lancers, Nathan Krusko came out of the penalty box and started a rush down the left side. Krusko chipped the puck to Matt Meier who wristed it by Jones to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead at 12:05 of the second.
In the final period Brannon McManus tallied his fourth of the year as he went in on an odd man rush with Hank Crone. Inside the left wing circle, McManus let a wrist shot go over the shoulder of Peyton Jones and just under the cross bar to give Omaha a 5-1 lead 12:55 into the final period of regulation. The goal was unassisted.
With just over a minute to go in the game, Lincoln scored as Patrick Polino notched his fourth of the year to pull the Stars back within three goals. In the end, Zackarias Skog stopped 35 of 37 shots for his fourth win of the year in a 5-2 Lancers' victory over Lincoln.
