Gornet to Harvard
October 31, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux City Musketeers News Release
Sioux City Musketeers goaltender Cameron Gornet announced his commitment to Harvard University. The league-leader in saves (219) and minutes (538) is playing in his second season in the USHL after posting a 11-7-1 record, 2.26 GAA and .923 SV% last season with Sioux City.
"When people started to ask three years ago, when I was suppose to be applying for college as a senior, what college I wanted to go to for hockey and for an education, Harvard was the first to come to mind," Gornet said. "Not only is it world renown for its academics, but it is in Boston. What better place is there?"
Gornet will be joining family while attending Harvard, as his older brother now lives and works in Boston. The former Cornell University grad as already began trash-talking the future rivalry. Gornet noted that family is a priority, as is the academics involved with playing college hockey.
"The first and most important people are my family. My mom and dad have always been there for me," Gornet said. "Whether it was a tough game, or one of the best I have had, I can always look to them for support. They are truly the best parents in the world."
Gornet also mentioned that goalie coaches Shane Clifford and Beau Erickson have elevated his game to new levels while in Sioux City, and thanked Bruce Racine for laying the foundation in St. Louis since his second year squirt. Pete Samargia has also helped Gornet mentally prepare for the rigorous, and sometimes unforgiving play of junior hockey.
The former St. Louis Blues AAA (T1EHL) goalie was drafted in the 2013 Phase II USHL draft in the 10th round, 139th overall by the Sioux City Musketeers. Gornet played in the IIHF Junior Club World Cup in Russia, where he and the Musketeers won a bronze medal in 2014.
Gornet is the second USHL goaltender to receive a college commitment this week, and joins seven other USHL players currently committed to Harvard University. Gornet and the Musketeers are currently in third place in the Western Conference standings after a month of play, something he hopes to build upon.
"I want to shoot for it all. Why not? I aimed for the starts to get to here in life, why not aim that high again?" Gornet said. "I want to be the best goalie in the league, and win the Clark Cup, but to do that every day has to be a day to get better. Every second has to have the work ethic and the compete that got me to this point."
