Omaha Lancers News Release
Omaha, NE - Matt Gaudreau scored the game-winner in overtime and Alex Lyon turned in 25 saves as the Omaha Lancers battled back for a 3-2 overtime victory over the Fargo Force Friday evening in front of 2,429 fans at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. With the win, the Lancers improved to 3-1-1 on the year and have now won three consecutive games. Omaha is now locked in a three-way tie atop the Western Conference alongside Fargo and the Waterloo Black Hawks.
After a predominantly scoreless opening period of play the Lancers finally broke the scoreless deadlock with just 18 seconds left in the frame when a one-timer from Jonathan Liau found daylight between the pads of Fargo goaltender Zane Gothberg. Ken Babinski and Jimmy Murray assisted on the five-on-five even strength goal, which was Liau's first marker of the 2011-2012 season.
Fargo wasted little time evening the contest as Neal Goff's slap shot from the high slot just 1:26 into the second period solved Omaha goaltender Alex Lyon. Tanner Lane garnered the only assist on the equalizing marker, which snapped a stretch of 146:26 of scoreless netminding from Lyon to open the season. The Force grabbed their first and only lead of the season late in the period when a defensive zone turnover by Kenney Morrison landed right on the stick of Bryn Chyzyk who made no mistake in driving home his third goal of the season. The even strength marker came 18:53 into the middle period.
The Lancers were quick to respond in the third period though as, with an early power play opportunity, Eli Lichtenwald slammed home his second goal of the season just 1:02 into the final period of regulation. Murray and Casey Bailey assisted on the man-advantage marker, which was Omaha's only power play strike of the evening in six opportunities.
Gaudrea ended the back-and-forth affair 1:31 into overtime when a perfect pass from Greg Gozzo at the right wing found Gaudreau on the back door who made no mistake in landing his first career USHL marker.
Lyon turned in another solid outing in goal denying 25 of Fargo's 27 total shots in the game. With the win, Lyon improved to 2-0-1 on the year. Meanwhile, Gothberg suffered the overtime setback despite 29 saves on 32 Omaha shots. Gothberg is now 2-2-1 on the year.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they head to Waterloo for a 7:05 PM showdown with the Black Hawks.
