Lancaster loses eighth straight

Lancaster Stormers News Release

Matt Scheuing spent his day teaching social studies to high school sophomores and his evening returning to haunt his former Barnstormers club, working seven innings in a rain-delayed, 9-4 Road Warriors win in front of 3,655 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The loss was the eighth straight for the Barnstormers and sent them tumbling into third place in the Atlantic League?s Southern Division. They trail the division-leading Camden Riversharks by one-half game and the Atlantic City Surf by percentage points.

Scheuing (6-8) yielded nine hits and four runs, three earned, while walking one and striking out four. He never lost the lead he was handed in the top of the third when Teuris Olivares doubled into the right field corner to drive in Derek Barrows, and Mike Huggins followed with his second homer of the series, a blast over the wall in left center.

After a 39-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth, the Road Warriors built their lead to 4-1 on a sacrifice fly by Huggins in the fifth.

Lancaster would close within one on a rally in the bottom of the inning. Steve Van Note doubled off the fence in right field with one out and scored on the second of three singles to right by Reggie Taylor. When the throw home was dropped by catcher Manny Mejia, Taylor took second. He would score on a broken bat single to left by Danny Gonzalez to cut the lead to 4-3. Scheuing got out of the inning as Jutt Hileman grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

Brian Whitaker (9-6) was unable to keep the game tight. Manny Mejia lined a single to right on a 1-2 pitch to open the sixth inning and went to second on a bloop hit to left by Bryan Goelz. Former Barnstormer Jason Bryan drilled a single into left to load the bases. Barrows was retired on a foul pop up, giving Whitaker an escape route, but he could not find it, giving up a two-run single to David Housel and a two-run double to Sheldon Fulse. The inning was capped by a Teuris Olivares sacrifice fly, and the Barnstormers never threatened to overtake the Road Warriors again.
