Lancaster Stormers News Release
Luke Hughes and Kent Matthes powered the Lancaster Barnstormers, each with a solo home run, to beat the Somerset Patriots 4-3 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday.
The win was Lancaster's eighth straight and improved their second half record to 14-7, keeping them atop the Freedom Division by two games over the York Revolution.
The home runs came in the fourth and fifth. Luke Hughes belted his home run over the right center wall to lead off the fourth, giving Lancaster a 3-1 edge. With two outs in the fifth, Kent Matthes roped a line drive over the left field wall to give the Stormers a 4-2 lead.
It was the only hit on the night for both batters.
Lancaster's first run came in the second. First baseman Mike McDade reached first after a throw from Robert Andino took a bounce too hard for first basemen Thomas Neal to handle. Charlie Cutler followed with a single into right. Later with two outs, Anderson Feliz sent an RBI double down the left field line to score McDade giving Lancaster the early 1-0 lead.
The Barnstormers added a run in the latter half of the third. Brian Cavazos-Galvez led off with a double to left. He advanced to third on a Kevin Rivers sacrifice bunt. Cavazos-Galvez scored on a Matthes grounder to short, when catcher Adam Donachie was unable to maintain a handle on Andino's throw home.
Michael Burgess and Hughes exchanged homers in the fourth. The Patriots scored again in the fifth. After a one out single and stolen base from Ollie Linton, Aharaon Eggleston would later come up to knock a two out RBI single to left center, making the score 3-2. Again, Lancaster used the solo home run to increase its advantage back to two.
Somerset would push the Barnstormers again in the eighth. Neal led off the inning with a single scalded into center. Eggleston followed with a perfectly executed hit-and-run, to send Neal to third. Scott Gracey induced a double play out of David Vidal, allowing a run to score, but quelling the threat.
Marcus Walden survived Adam Donachie's two-out single in the ninth to record his third save of the season.
Lancaster starter Bryan Morgado (2-5) earned his second win of the year. Morgado went five innings allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Lancaster bullpen was also effective, as Kyle Simon, Scott Patterson, Gracey and Walden combined for one run on four hits in four innings of play.
The loss went to Somerset's Matt Zielinski (6-2). Zielinski let up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in seven innings.
Game two of the series will be on Saturday. The Barnstormers will send righty Ray Hanson (2-0) to the mound to face the Somerset right hander Mickey Storey (5-3). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
