Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD -Southern Maryland rode the stellar pitching performance of LHP Brian Burres, while banging out 11 hits to pick up the 9-1 victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters in game one of the four game series.
LHP Brian Burres went 7.2 innings, allowing a run on four hits, walking two, and striking out seven to pick up his fifth win of the season. Sugar Land actually got on the board first in the top of the first. Denny Almonte scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Wallace to make it 1-0.
That would prove to be all for the Skeeters as the Blue Crabs took over on offense. In the bottom of the third with two outs, Fred Lewis singled to bring Antone DeJesus to the plate. DeJesus returned to the lineup for the first time since June 10th, having missed action with an injury. Antone looped a single out to center to score Lewis to tie the game at 1-1.
Southern Maryland then cracked the game open, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending ten men to the plate. With two runners on, Keith Castillo came to the plate, and hit a fly ball toward the corner down the left field line. Delwyn Young ranged over but was unable to make the play. It was ruled an error as one run scored to make it 2-1. After a Casey Frawley single that scored another run, Grant Zawadzki came to the plate, and roped a double into left center field to score two more runs to make it 5-1. A few batters, with two runners on Zach Wilson stepped to the dish, and drove a three run homer over the wall in left center to make it 8-1. In total, seven runs were scored on five hits in the bottom of the frame in the fourth inning.
Casey Frawley smashed his second homerun in as many nights over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-1, and put the game out of reach. The Blue Crabs chased Sugar Land starter Matt Wright out of the ballgame after just 3.2 innings. Wright allowed eight runs on eight hits. The Skeeters also left the bases loaded twice on the evening, along with five runners in scoring position. With the win, Southern Maryland is now 6-1 at home, and 13-4 overall against Sugar Land in 2015.
Game two of the series will commence tomorrow night from Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M. RHP Derek Blacksher (3-2, 2.22) will toss for Sugar Land, while LHP Wade Korpi (3-2, 5.80) will start for Southern Maryland.
