WALDORF, Md. - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their seventh-game in the last eight days, falling to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on the road at Regency Furniture Stadium, 9-1. The loss drops Sugar Land to 8-13 in the second half and 44-47 overall.

Outfielder Denny Almonte helped Sugar Land produce the Skeeters' lone run in the top of the first. The speedster worked a walk in a seven-pitch at-bat to start the inning and stole second in the ensuing at-bat. He advanced to third on a wild pitch before Chris Wallace lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring Almonte home.

Southern Maryland utilized its own speed in the bottom of the third to tie the game. With two outs, Fred Lewis singled back to Matt Wright on the mound to keep the inning alive. The right-fielder then stole second when a single to centerfield off the bat of Antone DeJesus allowed Lewis to cross the plate and tie the game at one.

Nothing seemed to go right for Sugar Land in the bottom of the fourth as Wright surrendered seven runs in the inning to give the Blue Crabs a commanding, 8-1 lead. Following a leadoff groundout, the Skeeters all-time leader in wins gave up a walk to Jovan Rosa and a single to Jamar Walton. With two on, Wright induced a fly ball to left, but Delwyn Young was unable to track, leading to the first run of the inning on the error. Casey Frawley then singled home a run before Grant Zawadzki plated a pair with a double to center. After a groundout and a single from DeJesus, Zach Wilson hit a three-run home run to chase Wright from the game, leaving down 8-1.

Wright was tagged with the loss in the contest. Last year's Atlantic League leader in strikeouts lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing a season-high eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk. He fanned six in the contest, but the 3.2 innings was the four-year member of the Skeeters second shortest outing this season.

After Cory VanAllen threw 1.1 innings of perfect baseball, James Parr entered to relieve the southpaw in the sixth. Frawley welcomed Parr by hitting a leadoff home run on his first offering, increasing the score to 9-1. Parr would go on to strike out the side after surrendering the long ball.

Robbie Weinhardt worked a perfect seventh with a pair of strikeouts and Adrian Martin fanned two in the eighth, but the bats never got going as the Skeeters dropped the 9-1 decision.
