Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws dropped their series opener against the Augusta GreenJackets 4-1 on Saturday. Lakewood was out hit 15-8 in the game, and just could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit. The biggest moment of the game came early when the BlueClaws loaded the bases with nobody out in the 4th inning, and did not score a run.

Augusta's Shawn Sanford got the start, and he pitched fantastic. A native of Vorhees, NJ, Sanford held Lakewood to 4 hits and no runs over 6 innings en route to his 7th win of the season. Lakewood's starter Lisalberto Bonilla labored through 5 2/3rds innings, but he allowed just 2 runs to score on 9 hits while striking out 7.

Zach Collier and Carlos Alonso each went 2-4 in the game with Alonso collecting the only RBI of the game for Lakewood. Bill Rice got his first at-bat at FirstEnergy Park as a member of the BlueClaws, and he delivered with a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 9th inning.

In the bottom of the 4th, Lakewood loaded the bases with 2 walks and single, but Augsta starter Shawn Sanford wiggled out of it. He struck out Steve Singleton and Anthony Hewitt both swinging, then got Geancarlo Mendez to line out to SS to end the inning. Lakewood never threatened again until the 9th when they plated 1 run, but left 2 men on when the game ended.

Sunday the BlueClaws will send out LHP Ervis Manzanillo (7-5, 4.93 ERA) and Augusta will counter with RHP Taylor Rogers (6-8, 2.74 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm on Sunday.
