'Dogs Cut Power After Early Deficit, Win 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Scottie Allen penned 6.0 innings of one-run ball, and Charleston found its offense after falling behind early, as the RiverDogs ran past the the West Virginia Power, 3-1, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4,236 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston upped its record to 14-15 this half and 40-59 overall, while West Virginia regressed to 10-19 and 45-52.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead against Allen (4-1) in the top of the first inning. Andy Vasquez tripled on a line drive just past the diving grasp of RiverDogs left fielder Shane Brown, and came down the line to score on a RBI groundout by Mel Rojas, Jr.

Power starter Colton Cain set down the side 1-2-3 in the first and second innings, but the bottom of the RiverDogs lineup got to the left-hander for a tying tally in the third. Jeff Farnham laced a double to the opposite field, and made the trip to the plate on a RBI single by Jose Mojica.

Allen and Cain continued their mastery in the middle innings, trading zeroes until Charleston broke through to take its first lead of the contest in the sixth versus West Virginia reliever Brooks Pounders (5-4).

Anderson Feliz continued his hot hitting with a one-out double over the head of right fielder Dan Grovatt to begin the frame. Shane Brown followed with a single into right field, before Kevin Mahoney lined a RBI single up the middle to push Charleston in front, 2-1.

The Power got a look at Allen over 6.0 innings five days ago in West Virginia, but could still not get a read on the Californian. Allen retired the final five batters he faced, yielding the one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out four.

The RiverDogs added an insurance run off Justin Ennis in the bottom of the eighth, as Feliz played the role of catalyst again. The second baseman smoked a triple to the centerfield wall, and came in touch the plate on a RBI groundout by Mahoney for a 3-1 cushion.

Charleston closer Mark Montgomery had come on to strand the tying run at second base in the eighth, and stayed on to record his seventh save of the campaign in the ninth. Rogelio Noris came to the plate as the tying run following a single by Grovatt, but was robbed of a base hit by Garrison Lassiter, who made a beautiful stop to his left and perfect throw across the diamond from his knees to end it.
