Jacobs, Coyle Each Knock in 3 Runs in Drive's 8-4 Win

Greenville Drive News Release

Hagerstown, MD - It had felt like ages since Kyle Stroup's (2-5) last victory on the mound for the Drive - just over three months to be exact. Making his second start since being activated from the disabled left with a strained oblique, the right-hander scattered six hits over 5.0 innings, as Greenville (52-47, 14-15) defeated the Hagerstown Suns (55-43, 15-13), 8-4.

Having endured a seven hour bus ride from New Jersey following last night's finale versus the BlueClaws, the Drive could have quivered in the series opener due to an early start time. Saturday's game, which was originally scheduled for 7 PM, was pushed up four hours due to a heavy storm that knocked over a light pole at Municipal Stadium.

The game got off to an auspicious start for Stroup, who allowed a leadoff single by Blake Kelso, followed by an RBI-double fro Adrian Sanchez. However, it would be the only run Stroup would allow over his outing, facing the minimum number of batters in his final four outings, being aided by a pair of double plays, a pick-off, and a caught stealing.

After being limited to one hit through the first four innings versus Hagerstown starter Chris McKenzie, the Drive offense took the lead in the top of the fifth with three straight doubles by Michael Almanzar, David Renfroe and Wilfred Pichardo.

An inning later Greenville tacked on three more runs, building a four-run advantage against the Suns bullpen. Felix Sanchez led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch scored on Sean Coyle's single. Brandon Jacobs then followed with a two-run homer, his 14th of the season.

The duo of Coyle and Jacobs continued to guide the Greenville offense, accounting for the team's final three insurance runs. Jacobs doubled home Coyle in the seventh, and in their final turn at bat, Coyle blasted his a two-run homer - his 10th of the season and second in as many games.

The Suns closed out the game's scoring with a three-run homer by Jason Martinson off Michael Gleason in the bottom of the ninth.

The Drive and Suns continue their four-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 4:05 PM. Right-hander Brandon Workman (2-5, 4.23 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Hagerstown counters with left-hander Matt Grace (9-5, 4.55 ERA).

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, July 28th to closeout the month with a four-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs.
