Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lakewood, NJ - After losing Adam Duvall to a hamstring injury on Thursday, the Augusta GreenJackets knew they'd have to step up as a team to fill the void left by the loss of their biggest run-producer. They did that in a big way on Saturday night, picking up 15 hits in a 4-1 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws. The GreenJackets have now won 14 of their last 17.
The GreenJackets had runners on the basepaths early and often, but didn't break through against Lakewood starter Lisalberto Bonilla until the third inning. Bobby Haney singled to open the frame and was bunted over to second. Chris Lofton singled to put runners at the corners before Ryan Lollis's RBI single scored Haney to give Augusta a 1-0 lead. The GreenJackets doubled their lead with a second run on a Josh Mazzola RBI groundout.
Augusta starter Shawn Sanford - pitching in his native New Jersey - got into trouble in the fourth, loading the bases with no one out. Sanford struck out two straight hitters before getting a line out to escape the jam. Sanford (7-6) worked through six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four. He's won his last four decisions.
The GreenJackets added two more runs in the seventh inning off the Lakewood bullpen. Lollis doubled home another run on his third hit of the night to make it a 3-0 Augusta lead while Ryan Scoma's RBI groundout pushed the advantage to four runs.
Lakewood got their only run of the evening in the ninth inning as Seth Rosin came one strike away of preserving a shutout win. Carlos Alonso's RBI single put the âClaws on the board at 4-1. Rosin struck out Edgar Duran - his fifth strikeout in two innings - to finish the game and preserve the win for Sanford on a night where three Augusta pitchers combined to strike out 11.
Bonilla (2-3) took the loss for the BlueClaws, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out seven.
The GreenJackets send Taylor Rogers (7-8, 2.69) to the mound on Sunday to try and make it two wins in a row while Lakewood counters with Ervis Manzanillo (7-5, 4.93). First pitch from Lakewood comes at 5:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 4:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
