July 23, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
Savannah catcher Albert Cordero had six runs batted in, and Joe Bonfe's walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning gave the Sand Gnats a 7-6 win over the Lexington Legends Saturday night in Savannah. Bonfe's hit capped a comeback that saw the Sand Gnats wipe out a 6-1 Lexington lead with two runs in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and two in the ninth.
Each team scored a run in the first inning, and the Legends jumped on top with three runs in the second. After Ben Orloff was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Jhonny Medrano and Bryce Lane followed with back-to-back home runs to give the Legends a 4-1 advantage.
Lexington added a run in the third on Orloff's sacrifice fly and another in the sixth when Mike Kvasnicka's two-out single scored Delino DeShields Jr. from second base. DeShields had reached first on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Savannah began its comeback in the sixth inning on a triple by Blake Forsythe and Cordero's third home run of the season. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Darrell Ceciliani singled, and after
Wilfredo Tovar fouled out, Rafael Fernandez singled, sending Ceciliani to third. Forsythe walked to load the bases, and Cordero followed with a single up the middle, scoring Ceciliani and Fernandez to cut the lead to one at 6-5.
In the ninth, Ceciliani struck out, but Tovar walked and Fernandez hit a broken-bat double into short left-center field, leaving runners at second and third. Forsythe was walked intentionally to load the bases. Cordero singled to drive in the tying run, but Aderlin Rodriguez grounded into a force play at the plate for the second out. Bonfe then sent a ground single through the right side of the infield as Forsythe came home with the winning run. Ronny Morla (2-2), who pitched the ninth inning, got the win. Brian Streilein (5-3), who worked the eighth and ninth for Lexington, took the loss.
The series continues with a 2:05 p.m. game Sunday. Attendance 2,896 Box score at d 11_07_23_lexafx_savafx_1
