SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, scored 10 runs on 11 hits on Wednesday night at Schaumburg Baseball Stadium, as they beat the Schaumburg Boomers 10-3, securing the series victory and will now go for the sweep tomorrow.

The Crushers (41-45) have now won three of their last four series and are now 25-25 against Eastern Division teams this season. The loss for Schaumburg (37-49) is their fourth loss in a row and this is the farthest under the .500 mark that they have been all season.

The Crushers put the first runs on the scoreboard tonight. With one out, Eric Grabe reached on a fielding error by the Boomers' third baseman, Kenny Towns. He would come all the way around to score on a double by Sean Hurley. Hurley then scored after Richard Seigel knocked an RBI single to left field.

Lake Erie's two run lead was short lived as the Boomers took their only lead of the night in the bottom of the second inning. Jack Cockrum hit a fly ball to the right field corner that the right fielder, Seigel lost in the sun. It rolled to the wall and Cockrum got to third base. Nick Oberg then doubled down the left field line, scoring Cockrum. Tobias Moreno doubled near the left field line, as well, plating a run. Moreno moved to third on a fly ball to left, and Argenis Aldazoro knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

With the Boomers up, 3-2, Lake Erie found their answer in the top of the fourth inning. Jose Barraza led off the inning with a double. Grabe then knocked him in with another double to right field. Sean Hurley singled to right, moving Grabe to third base. With one out, Bryan De La Rosa walked to load the bases. Max Casper then hit a ground ball to third base and Towns committed his second error of the game, allowing Grabe to score, putting the Crushers up 4-3, but they continued to pour it on. Robb Paller grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring a run and Brendan Costantino singled up the middle, scoring De La Rosa. The four run inning put the Crushers up, 6-3.

The Men of Crush added another run in the seventh inning when Costantino led off with a double to left field. He moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielder's choice by Barraza.

The nail in the coffin came in the top of the ninth inning when Costantino singled and Connor Oliver walked, setting up a three-run home run off the bat of Grabe, his fifth of the season. That put the Crushers up, 10-3.

Crushers' starting pitcher, Juan Caballero (3-1) pitched a gem. He was awarded the win after he threw seven innings, only allowing the three runs in the third inning. He gave up six hits but struck out four Boomers. Trevor Longfellow made his first appearance since June 29 after he was activated from the disabled list, yesterday. He put the Boomers down in order in the eighth inning. Manny Arciniega allowed a double in the ninth, but did not surrender a run.

For Schaumburg, Gunnar Kines (4-5) started and got knocked around as he took the loss. Kines went five innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits. However, he did strike out eight Crusher hitters. Ken Knudsen gave up a run in two innings of work. Patrick Dolan did not allow a run in the eighth, but Derek DeYoung allowed three runs on two hits in the top of the ninth inning.

For the Crushers, Costantino went 3-5 tonight with an RBI. Barraza, Grabe and Hurley all had two hits, while Grabe scored three times and drove in four runs. Oliver has now reached base safely in 19 straight games and De La Rosa has reached base in 10 consecutive games.

The Crushers will wrap up this series, and the season series, on Thursday evening. The Crushers starting pitcher will be southpaw Connor Reed (3-1, 4.03) while the Boomers will counter with right-hander Brett Mabry (2-3, 4.24). First pitch is scheduled for 7:30.
