The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, and the Schaumburg Boomers found themselves locked in a back-and-fourth battle as the Crushers overcame the Boomers five run fifth inning, to win, 9-8 on Tuesday night at Schaumburg Baseball Stadium.

For the Crushers (40-45), this is the sixth win in 10 tries against the Boomers this season. Lake Erie is 14-11 in one-run games. Tonight's loss for Schaumburg (37-48) is their third in a row. The Boomers are 7-11 in the month of August.

The Boomers took their first and only lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Dean doubled to left field, moved to third base on a groundout and scored via sacrifice fly off the bat of Kenny Towns.

The Crushers went to work offensively in the top of the second inning. With one out, Boomers' starting pitcher, Kagen Hopkins, walked Sean Hurley and allowed Parker Norris to single to right field. Bryan De La Rosa then knocked a run in with a ground-rule double to right field. Max Casper plated another run as he hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Finally, Robb Paller hit a two-run homer, his first as a Crusher, around the foul pole in right field.

The Boomers added a run in the bottom of the second inning. Mike McClellan and Mikal Hill hit back-to-back, one out singles. James Keller was then hit by a pitch and Nick Oberg hit an RBI groundout to first baseman, Jose Barraza.

The Crushers offense continued to go to work in the fourth inning. De La Rosa crushed his fourth home run of the season to left-center field to lead off the inning. Casper immediately doubled to left field and came around to score on a two-out single by Connor Oliver.

With Lake Erie up, 6-2, in the fifth inning, the Men of Crush added one more. Eric Grabe led the inning off with a double. He would tag up and go to third on a fly out by Hurley. Again with two outs, De La Rosa singled to left-center, plating Grabe.

Schaumburg did not go away quietly and put together an impressive fifth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Tobias Moreno, Kenny Towns and Argenis Aldazoro all singled to load the bases with no outs. Mark Nelson hit a groundball that bounced off of Barraza's glove. Every runner moved up a base on the error including Moreno, who scored. Another run came home, as McClellan walked. Hill hit a fielder's choice to second base, scoring Aldazoro. James Keller hit a single that allows Nelson to score. And then, Dean hit a single to score Hill, capping the five run inning, tying the game up at 7.

Lake Erie wasted no time getting the runs back. In the top of the sixth inning, Paller singled and Brendan Costantino stroked a base hit to right, moving Paller to third. Connor Oliver then hit an RBI single to right field, scoring the go-ahead run. Barraza singled to score Costantino, giving the Crushers a very important insurance run.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, after Brad Duffy got the first two outs, he allowed singles to Aldazoro and Nelson and walked McClellan to load the bases. Duffy then walked Hill, which scored Aldazoro and cut the Crushers lead to one run, 9-8. Chandler Jagodzinski (12) came on and got the final out of the inning, getting pinch-hitter Paul Kronenfeld to line out to left field.

Crushers' starter, Steve Hagen (6-5) was given the win after the Crushers offense got two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Hagen went five innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks. Jordan McCoy pitched a scoreless inning and Duffy pitched 1.2 innings allowing a run on three hits. Jagodzinski was given the save after going 1.1 innings, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.

For Schaumburg, the starter, Hopkins allowed seven runs on 10 hits over five innings. Kurt Lipscomb (0-2) did not record an out but allowed two runs to score on three hits in the sixth inning and was given the loss. Jake Joyce, Austin Kerr and Derek DeYoung pitched a combined four, scoreless innings.

For the Crushers, Oliver has now reached base safely in 18 straight games and Paller is now on an eight game on-base streak and has a season-high six game hit streak. De La Rosa has reached base in nine consecutive games and has hit safely in eight of the last nine games that he has played.

The Crushers will continue this series in Schaumburg, Illinois on Wednesday. The Crushers will start right-hander Juan Caballero (2-1, 3.79). The Boomers will start lefty, Gunnar Kines (4-4, 3.14). First pitch is scheduled for 7:30.
