LAFC Re-Signs Defender Eddie Segura
July 26, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Los Angeles FC News Release
Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today the Club has re-signed defender Eddie Segura for the 2024 season, with Club options through 2026.
"Eddie has been a top-class player and person for LAFC since his arrival in 2018,'" said LAFC Co-President and General Manager John Thorrington. "This contract renewal is deserved recognition of his professionalism and commitment to LAFC, and we are excited to have Eddie continue his career in Black & Gold."
Segura last played for LAFC on Oct. 20, 2022, in the team's victory over the Galaxy in the Western Conference Semifinals. The 24-year-old is recovering from a tear in his right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that required two surgeries in the off-season to repair.
The Colombia native first joined LAFC at the age of 21 on an initial six-month loan period from Colombian side Atletico Huila on November 21, 2018, and then signed a permanent multi-year agreement with LAFC on July 29, 2019.
Now in his sixth season with LAFC, Segura has been an important piece of the backline, making 100 appearances (91 starts) and registering three goals and five assists across all competitions. Segura was in the midst of an LAFC record 72 consecutive regular season appearances (82 across all competitions) before being sidelined with an ACL injury on July 24, 2021. He returned from that injury on June 30, 2022, and played in 14 games (8 starts) while helping LAFC to the 2022 Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup.
Prior to LAFC, Segura led Atlético Huila to a fourth-place regular season finish in the 2018 Torneo Apertura while playing in every league and postseason match. In all, Segura saw action in 80 matches across all competitions for Huila, scoring two goals in 7,121 minutes. Segura spent his first four professional years with Deportivo Pereira of Colombia's second division.
At the international level, Segura has represented Colombia's U-23 team, registering seven appearances (six starts) in the 2020 CONMEBOL pre-Olympic qualifiers.
