Charlotte FC Scenarios to Advance to Leagues Cup Knockout Round
July 26, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Charlotte FC News Release
Charlotte FC face Necaxa in their second and final Leagues Cup Group Stage match on Saturday, July 29th at Bank of America Stadium. The team will be looking to book their spot in the Round of 32 by securing a top two spot in the group of three teams.
In CLTFC's first match at FC Dallas, a last gasp Ben Bender equalizer in regulation led to a penalty shootout win for the Crown. Per Leagues Cup rules, Group Stage matches that end in a draw go directly to a penalty shootout (no overtime). The winner of the penalty shootout gains an extra point for a total of two, while the loser is left with only one point from the regulation draw.
FC Dallas booked their Knockout Round spot on Tuesday night with a win over Necaxa. Currently, they are in first with four points but have no games remaining. CLTFC sit in second with two points while Necaxa are in last with zero points.
The shootout victory against Dallas gave Charlotte FC full control of their own destiny, as a win or a draw against Necaxa on Saturday will send the team through in the top two. An outright win, or a draw with a shootout win, would see CLTFC pass Dallas for first place. A draw with a shootout loss would send CLTFC through insecond place. Necaxa must win to keep their Leagues Cup dream alive.
For the full list of scenarios surrounding Saturday's match for Charlotte FC's potential finishing place in the group, see below:
Charlotte FC Win = First Place (5 points)
Charlotte FC Draw + Shootout Win = First Place (4 points, head-to-head
tiebreaker over Dallas)
