December 13, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Los Angeles FC News Release
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club has acquired defender Marco Farfan from the Portland Timbers in exchange for $300,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM).
"Despite only 22 years old, Marco has proven that he has the right attributes and experience to consistently perform in our league," said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington. "His qualities are a good fit for how we play, and we look forward to seeing his career continue to develop at LAFC."
Farfan, 22, becomes the first offseason signing for the Black & Gold and will join the Club ahead of the 2021 campaign. This past season, his fourth with the Timbers, Farfan posted career-highs in games (15), starts (9) and minutes (854). He made his 2020 debut in the 2-2 draw against LAFC during the MLS is Back Tournament on July 23.
Originally signed to a Homegrown contract on October 14, 2016, Farfan would go on to play in 34 regular season matches (23 starts) for Portland. The 5-foot-9 defender also spent time on loan with Timbers 2 between 2016-19. During his time in the USL Championship, Farfan saw action in 57 games, tallying his lone professional goal during a 4-1 defeat against Phoenix Rising on August 5, 2018.
At the international level, Farfan was most recently called in to his first senior USMNT training camp earlier this month and would make his debut during the 6-0 victory against El Salvador on December 9. Farfan also represented the U.S. U-19s in 2016 and 2017, as well as the U-23 side for friendlies against Egypt and Netherlands in March 2019.
