LA Galaxy Select Defender Tom Smart in 2020 MLS SuperDraft

LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy have selected defender Tom Smart from the University of Akron with the 19th pick of Round 2 (45th overall) in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.

Smart played for New Mexico from 2015-2018 before transferring to Akron. With New Mexico, Smart appeared in 54 games, all starts, during his three-year career as a Lobo and recorded eight assists.

During the 2019 season with Akron, Smart made nine total appearances for the Zips.

Before coming for New Mexico, he played left back for West Bromwich Albion FC for five years with the U21 and U19 squads.

Internationally, Smart helped Northern Ireland win the 2014 Milk Cup at the U19 Elite level and also played for Northern Ireland's U19 match vs. Wales in May 2013.

The five-time MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy's 2020 home opener is set for Saturday, March 7 at Dignity Health Sports Park against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 7 p.m. PT.
