January 19, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has signed midfielder Victor Vázquez to a one-year contract extension through the end of the 2022 MLS regular season with a club option for 2023.
In his first season with the club in 2021, Vázquez, 34, tallied three goals and ranked second on the Galaxy with six assists in 28 games played (21 starts). In three regular seasons played in MLS (2017-18, 2021), Vázquez has tallied 19 goals and 31 assists in 80 games played (68 starts).
"Victor is one of the most intelligent soccer players that I've been around and we're thrilled to bring him back for another season," said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney.
Prior to joining the Galaxy, Vázquez spent two seasons with Toronto FC (2017-18), where he notched 16 goals and 25 assists in 52 regular-season appearances (47 starts). Vázquez was part of the treble-winning Toronto FC side that claimed the Canadian Championship, Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup in 2017, a year in which he was also honored in the MLS Best XI. The following season, his production continued with another eight goals and nine assists in 2018 regular season play and he also helped Toronto FC win a consecutive Canadian Championship. Following his time with TFC, Vázquez spent two seasons playing in Qatar and one in Belgium for K.A.S. Eupen.
Prior to joining MLS, the Spaniard played in 2016 for Liga MX club Cruz Azul, where he made 23 appearances, scoring one goal with one assist. He began his youth career at his hometown club, FC Barcelona, in 1997. Following his time in the youth system, Vázquez joined Barcelona C and eventually Barcelona B, remaining with Barcelona B for five seasons before being called into Pep Guardiola's first team on numerous occasions. He made his debut for Barcelona on April 12, 2008 as a substitute and eventually played in two UEFA Champions League group stage matches during the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons as Barcelona went on to win the Champions League in both seasons.
Following his time at Barcelona, Vázquez signed with Belgian side Club Brugge KV (Club Brugge) of the Jupiler Pro League. In five seasons with the Belgian club, he made 173 appearances, scoring 25 goals with 50 assists combined in all competitions. Amongst those appearances were 33 matches in Europa League Qualifiers and the Europa League, where he scored seven goals with four assists. He helped Club Brugge advance to the quarterfinals of the 2014-15 Europa League tournament. Vázquez's time in Belgium was highlighted by being named the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year for the 2014-15 season. That same year Club Brugge won the Belgian Cup and finished as runners up in the league. He was later sold to Cruz Azul following his time in Belgium.
