Kyle Wellwood named Molson Cup Player of the Month

The St. John's Maple Leafs announced today that forward Kyle Wellwood has won the January segment of the Molson Cup Player of the Month Award. Last month Wellwood scored 16 points in 15 games that included 5 goals and 11 assists. He was also +2 and had one game winning goal. During January he received three 2nd star and one 3rd star honors for 20 Molson Cup points.

His month was highlighted by 4 multiple point games, including a 4 point (G,3A) performance in a 4-2 win over the Hershey Bears on January 19, and a 4 game scoring streak from January 19 to January 26 in which he scored 11 points (3G,8A)

Wellwood currently sits second in Maple Leafs scoring with 53 points (21G,32A) and leads the team in goals. His 53 points also ranks 7th in AHL scoring. He will represent the Maple Leafs on the Canadian All-Star Team at the AHL All-Star Classic next week in Manchester, NH.

The Maple Leafs next action is tonight when the club faces the Hamilton Bulldogs at Mile One Stadium. Game time is 7:35pm and will be broadcast live on Radio Newfoundland (930AM) and www.sjmapleleafs.ca.
