Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (37-50) squared their series with the Oklahoma City Dodgers (51-37) after four games on Friday night, with a 7-3 victory in front of 7,002 fans at Cheney Stadium.
Oklahoma City jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jason Martin's 19th home run, yanked to right field. Tacoma roared ahead with a homer of their own in the third; with Scott Heineman (single) and Jarred Kelenic (walk) aboard, Kyle Lewis drilled a three-run tracer to the opposite field in right. For Lewis, it was his fifth home run in 14 games with the Rainiers this season, and his seventh in 10 games at all levels (High-A, Triple-A and MLB), amidst this latest rehab assignment. He's homered in five of his last six games overall.
Leading 3-2 in the fifth, Tacoma continued to tack on. Erick Mejia led off with a double to the wall in center, later scoring after an error and a Joe Odom RBI single. Heineman (RBI single) and Alex Blandino (sac fly) made it three straight run-scoring at-bats, and the Rainiers led 6-2.
OKC added a third run on an error in the seventh, but when the book closed on Tacoma left-hander Justus Sheffield, it was a quality start and his longest of 2022: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Sheffield threw 97 pitches and 68 for strikes. The Dodger starter and former Rainier/Mariner Sam Gaviglio was touched up for six runs (five earned) over 4.2 IP; he allowed six hits and walked two (5 K, 94 pitches).
The evening's final run came in the home eighth after Brian O'Keefe led off with a single. Marcus Wilson doubled off the wall in left with one out, and Mejia (fielder's choice) scored from third on an Odom RBI groundout.
A Tacoma bullpen trio of lefties held Oklahoma City scoreless without a hit over the final 2.1 innings (Nick Margevicius, Roenis Elias and Danny Young).
The penultimate game of this series will be on Saturday, a 7:05 PT first pitch at Cheney Stadium. RHP George Kirby is poised start and make his Triple-A debut for the Rainiers, against OKC RHP Andre Jackson.
Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com. All 2022 Rainiers games, home and away, can also be heard for free on the MiLB First Pitch app. HD video broadcasts of every game can be viewed with a MiLB.TV subscription.
