Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers try to re-take the lead in their road series against the Tacoma Rainiers when the teams meet at 9:05 p.m. CT at Cheney Stadium. The series is tied, 2-2, after OKC won the first two games of the series and the Rainiers responded with wins in the last two games.
Last Game: For the second straight night, the Tacoma Rainiers scored six runs between the third and fourth innings to take a lead they would not relinquish, sending the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a 7-3 loss Friday night at Cheney Stadium. The game got off to a good start for the Dodgers, with Jason Martin hitting a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Dodgers still led, 2-0, heading to the bottom of the third inning when Kyle Lewis hit a three-run homer to put the Rainiers ahead. Tacoma added three runs in the fourth inning to push the lead to 6-2. The Dodgers scored a run in the seventh inning on an error but left two runners in scoring position before getting closer. Tacoma tacked on its final run in the eighth inning.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Andre Jackson (0-6) makes his second start of July and his team-leading 14th start tonight...Jackson pitched July 9 against Las Vegas in OKC as he returned to the active roster following a stint on the Development List. It was his first appearance since June 19. He recorded a season-high eight strikeouts over 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on a pair of solo home runs and four total hits with one walk - a season low. He was charged with the loss in OKC's 4-3 defeat...Before going on the Development List, Jackson allowed nine runs and nine hits over 4.1 innings with seven walks across two games in Reno. But prior to June 14, Jackson had been in a groove. In his three previous starts combined, Jackson allowed three earned runs and nine hits in 15.0 IP, holding opponents 9-for-52 (.173) overall, 2-for-22 with runners on and 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position...The Dodgers are 3-10 in his starts this season, with losses in nine of the last 10...Jackson was selected by the Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Utah and made his Major League debut last season...Tonight is Jackson's first career appearance against the Rainiers.
Robbie Erlin (3-2) is scheduled to follow Jackson in a second straight piggyback appearance...He followed opener Garrett Cleavinger July 8 against Las Vegas and was supposed to serve as OKC's primary pitcher, however he only pitched 2.0 innings as he allowed seven runs and five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision of OKC's 10-3 loss...Over his last four outings, Erlin has allowed 22 runs and 24 hits over 12.0 innings. Prior to June 23 he held opponents to three runs or less in six straight outings and to two runs or less five times during the stretch...The lefty has also made two appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. He had his contract selected May 7 and pitched on back-to-back days May 8-9. He was designated for assignment May 11 and outrighted to OKC May 13...Erlin has appeared in 117 games (43 starts) in the Majors, primarily with San Diego, and was selected by Texas in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft from Scotts Valley High School (Calif.)...Tonight is his first appearance against the Rainiers since June 2019 when he made two relief appearances in Tacoma while with the El Paso Chihuahuas.
Against the Rainiers: 2022: 2-2 2021: N/A All-time: 53-52 At TAC: 21-33 The Dodgers and Rainiers meet for their first of two series of 2022 after last playing each other during the 2019 season. Tuesday's game was the first game between the clubs since Aug. 9, 2019 - a span of 1,069 days...Tacoma was the only Triple-A West foe the Dodgers did not play during the 2021 season. The teams were originally scheduled to play in April 2021, but the games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rainiers went on to win the league title...When the teams last met as part of the 2019 schedule, the Dodgers swept a three-game set at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, outscoring the Rainiers, 23-9. Zach McKinstry had a monster series, going 9-for-11 three doubles and three home runs along with 10 RBI...This week the Dodgers are making their first trip to Tacoma since the 2018 season and OKC is 21-33 all-time at Cheney Stadium...OKC is 2-0-3 against the Rainiers in the last five season series and has not lost a series to Tacoma since the 2014 season (0-4 in Tacoma).
From June Boon to July Blight: The Dodgers have now lost back-to-back games, as well as lost four of the last six games, and are 4-9 to start July, including a season-high five-game losing skid to open this month. During that time, the Dodgers' lead in the division standings has gone from 6.0 games down to a first-place tie with El Paso, which is 10-3 to open July, including three wins against OKC. Until last night, the Dodgers had owned sole possession of first place in the division standings since June 5...With last night's defeat, the team has exceeded the number of losses it had in all of June when they posted an 18-8 record.
J-Mart Special: Jason Martin homered for a second straight game Friday night, hitting a two-run blast in the first inning. Martin has hit eight homers in his last 15 games, nine homers in his last 17 games and he leads OKC with 19 home runs this season. His nine homers since June 25 are most among all Triple-A players and tied for most among all players in the Minors...His home run last night was the first allowed by Tacoma pitcher Justus Sheffield against a left-handed hitter this season...Martin has now hit safely in four straight games and also in 10 of his 12 games this month, batting .313 (15x48) with six homers, two doubles, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored. Martin has also reached base in 12 consecutive games to start July...Martin ranks third in the PCL in RBI (63), OPS (.954), extra-base hits (40) and total bases (161), while he ranks tied for third in home runs, runs scored (61) and triples (5). He also ranks fourth with a .585 SLG.
Drew Point: Drew Avans led off last night's game with a single, extending his current on-base streak to 27 games, which is the longest by an OKC player this year and longest active streak in the PCL. He is one of eight PCL players to have an on-base streak of 27 games or longer this season and he owns the longest on-base streak by a Dodgers player since the 2019 season when Gavin Lux reached base in 37 consecutive games...Avans has now hit safely in seven consecutive games (11x32) for his longest hitting streak of the season. He has hit safely in 23 of the 27 games during his on-base streak and has reached base safely in 41 of his last 42 games...Avans stole two bases Friday, marking the third time this season he's had two steals in a game, and he leads OKC with 16 stolen bases this year...From the start of the season through May 31, Avans batted .235 (20x85) with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI and 15 runs scored over 31 games. Since June 1 (36 games), Avans is batting .319 (44x138) with 10 doubles, four triples, three homers, 18 RBI and 32 runs scored. He also has 16 walks during the stretch...He leads the league with seven triples this season.
The Runaround: For the ninth time in 13 games this month, the Dodgers allowed at least seven runs last night. The Rainiers have scored 15 runs and collected 20 hits over the last two games after the Dodgers held Tacoma to five runs and nine hits over the first two games of the series. It's the first time Tacoma has scored at least seven runs in consecutive games since June 7-8 at Salt Lake and the first time they've scored seven-plus runs in consecutive home games this season...The Dodgers' 8.10 ERA in July is the highest among all full-season Minor League teams, as they have allowed 99 earned runs through 13 games - 19 more earned runs than the next-closest Triple-A team. Their 104 runs allowed overall this month are also most in the Minors...In the Dodgers' last 10 losses, opponents have scored 104 runs combined...Over 13 games this month, starting/primary pitchers have only combined for only 53.0 innings while allowing 53 runs (52 ER / 8.83 ERA) and 67 hits (.302 BAA; 67x222), including 13 homers. They have also walked 26 batters, resulting in a 1.76 WHIP...The Dodgers allowed another three-run homer last night, marking the seventh allowed last 18 games and 10th allowed in the last 23 games. Between April 15-June 18, the Dodgers allowed a total of four three-run homers or grand slams.
Offensive Remarks: After scoring at least five runs in three straight games, the Dodgers were held to three runs last night, and it was the third time in the last six games the Dodgers were held to three runs (all losses). Last night the team went just 2-for-15 with runners on base, including 1-for-13 following Jason Martin's homer in the first inning...The Dodgers tied their season low with one walk Friday and did not draw a walk until the ninth inning. OKC leads all Triple-A teams with 420 walks this season, while they rank second among the 30 teams with 555 runs scored, a .367 OBP and third with a .828 OPS and .461 SLG...OKC's +81 run differential leads the PCL.
The Future is Today: Miguel Vargas is set to participate in the annual MLB All-Star Futures Game at 6 p.m. CT today at Dodger Stadium (streamed live on Peacock). Vargas has played in 85 of the Dodgers' 88 games this season and last night was the first game Vargas did not play with OKC since May 29 against Reno at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. He will also miss tonight and Sunday's games...Vargas leads the PCL with 100 hits and 73 runs scored and is one of nine players across the Minors with at least 100 hits this season. Vargas' 168 total bases and 64 RBI are second-most in PCL, while his 48 walks and 21 doubles are tied for third and his 38 extra-base hits are tied for fourth.
Nodary Public: Ryan Noda picked up a hit last night to extend his on-base streak to 12 games - his second on-base streak of the season of at least 12 games this season. During the stretch, Noda is batting .295 (13x44) with two doubles, a triple, two homers, 10 RBI, eight runs scored and six walks. He reached base in 17 consecutive games April 5-24 and is tied for first in the PCL this season with 49 walks.
Around the Horn: This the third straight series to be tied 2-2 through four games, and the Dodgers dropped Game 5 in each of the last two instances...Friday's game featured a total of seven stolen bases - three by the Dodgers and four by the Rainiers. The Dodgers tied their season highs in stolen bases and stolen bases allowe...Jake Amaya went 2-for-4 last night to collect his third multi-hit game of the series. Over four games in Tacoma, Amaya is 6-for-14 with three walks...Michael Busch's seven-game hitting streak (12x30) came to an end last night. Friday also snapped a stretch in which Busch had reached base at least twice in four straight games, going 7-for-17 with four walks...Hunter Feduccia did not play last night but is 6-for-16 with five extra-base-hits over his last four games...The Dodgers are in the midst of a stretch of 15 straight games against West Division foes (4-6). OKC is 15-16 against the West Division this season.
