FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 13, 2009) - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KHOS), along with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Police Department (LFUCPD) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), will host a news conference Friday, August 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Applebee's Park to warn motorists of the dangers of driving drunk. The news conference is to announce the annual "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" enforcement and education campaign beginning Aug. 21 and running through Labor Day, and to promote Drive Smart Kentucky Night at the Lexington Legends baseball game at Applebee's Park at 7 p.m. August 14.

The KOHS, an agency within the Transportation Cabinet, will demonstrate the Drive Smart Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Simulator. This program puts drivers in a vehicle wearing goggles that simulate impairment, giving real-life exposure to the dangers of impaired driving without being put at risk.

WHY: Drunk driving is America's most-often-committed and deadliest crime. Over 13,000 people are killed each year in crashes nationwide involving a driver or motorcycle operator with an illegal blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher.
