Eight-run sixth carries Power to victory over Legends

The West Virginia Power erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Lexington Legends 12-6 at Applebee's Park Thursday night.

West Virginia held a 3-2 lead going into the sixth, but sent 11 men to the plate, scoring eight times on five hits, a walk and two Lexington errors. Tony Sanchez, the Pittsburgh Pirates first round pick in the 2009 draft, singled to start the inning. Kyle Morgan flied out, but Quincy Lattimore reached on an error by third baseman Michael Diaz. Jeremy Farrell singled to score Sanchez, and Bobby Spain followed with another single, scoring Latimore.

Henry Villar relieved Lexington starter Robert Bono, and got Danny Bomback to foul out to Diaz, but Austin McClune singled to bring home another run, making the score 6-2. Greg Picart walked to load the bases. Robbie Grossman's ground ball got by second baseman Albert Cartwright for an error, scoring Spain and McClune to give West Virginia an 8-2 lead. Sanchez, batting for the second time in the inning, hit a three-run homer, putting the Power in front 11-2.

The Legends came back with four in their half of the sixth, with two runs scoring on a double by Albert Cartwright to leave the score at 11-6.

Kyle Morgan hit a solo homer in the ninth for West Virginia to close out the scoring.

Noah Krol (4-0), who pitched three innings after entering the game in the third in relief of starter Bret Lorin, got the win. Bono (8-8) was the losing pitcher. Steve Brown, the reigning South Atlantic League Player of the Week, had a double and two singles for Lexington.

The series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Friday at Applebee's Park.
