BILOXI, Miss. â Mississippi Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods announced today the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League have assigned center Sergei Kuznetsov (SAIR-gay / kooz-NEHT-zahv) to the organization.
Kuznetsov, 22, is under contract to Phoenix and played this season for the Augusta Lynx, the East Coast Hockey League affiliate of the Coyotes. In 27 games, he scored three goals and picked up 12 assists to go along with a plus-7 rating and 30 penalty minutes.
The 6-foot and 200-pound native of Yaroslavl, Russia returns to Mississippi after playing the last two years with the Sea Wolves. Last season in 66 games with Mississippi, Kuznetsov tallied 12 goals and collected 25 assists for 37 points. He also had a plus-3 rating and 48 penalty minutes. In the Sea Wolves run to the Southern Conference Finals last year, Kuznetsov played in 10 playoff games, registering three assists and 14 penalty minutes. He was also named the Booster Club âFan Favorite' for the 2001-02 season.
"Kuznetsov is sound defensively and has offensive abilities. He was a big reason we were among the final four last year," said Woods. "Sergei is well-liked in the locker room and by the Sea Wolves fans."
Kuznetsov and the Sea Wolves get back into action tomorrow at 7:35 p.m., as Mississippi hosts the Baton Rouge Kingfish at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
