Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - Sioux Falls resident Matt Koziara returned to the mound at the Birdcage in front of 3,011 fans and delivered a complete game 10-2 victory for the Canaries (12-27) in their first-ever meeting with the El Paso Diablos (14-26). Koziara, who has given up professional baseball on a full-time basis, provided an emergency start for the Canaries with Peter Bauer missing a start with a tricep injury.

The Canaries took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Abner Arroyo hit a three-run homer, his seventh home run of the season.

The Canaries extended their lead in the fourth. Jason Sugden doubled to score Chris Hall and John Schmitz, and Chris Weber scored on a throwing error by Diablos shortstop Albenis Machado. After four the Canaries led 6-0.

A solo run homer by Matt Eichel got the Diablos on the board in the fifth, and brought the Canaries lead to 6-1.

After three walks loaded the bases, Chad Hermansen was hit by a pitch to score Hall, extending the Canaries lead to 7-1.

In the seventh, Dennis Anderson walked and Schmitz was hit by a pitch. Two consecutive Diablos errors allowed both to score. A double by Dustin Delucchi scored Hall for a 10-1 lead. The Diablos added a run in the ninth for the 10-2 final.

Matt Koziara (1-0) allowed two runs on eight hits in the Canaries first complete game victory of the season. Matt Parris (1-4) suffered his fourth consecutive loss.

The Canaries will host the El Paso Diablos in the second game of their three-game series tomorrow night at the Birdcage. Saturday night will be the Canaries "Wooden Bat Giveaway" presented by Schoeneman's Lumber. The first 500 kids 12 and under to enter the gates will receive a bat.
